Lock Haven announces plans to add women’s wrestling

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — Lock Haven University has announced plans to add women’s wrestling as a varsity sport. The addition of women’s wrestling brings LHU’s sport-sponsorship to 20 sports and the team will compete next year during the 2019-20 academic year.  LHU currently sponsors 17 intercollegiate athletic programs including NCAA Division I field hockey and men’s wrestling. All other sports compete at the NCAA DII level and within the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). In August 2018, Lock Haven announced plans to add women’s tennis and women’s golf. Women’s tennis will begin competition next year (2019-20) and women’s golf will begin competition in 2020-21.

Currently, there are 58 other women’s collegiate wrestling programs throughout the United States and since 2004, women’s wrestling has been recognized as an Olympic Sport. Fellow PSAC institutions Gannon and East Stroudsburg currently sponsor women’s wrestling. The Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) serves as the governing body for women’s college wrestling and competes under international freestyle rules. “Interest in competitive women’s wrestling is on the rise,” said LHU President Robert Pignatello. “With Lock Haven’s long history of wrestling success, the expansion of our wrestling program to include women’s wrestling makes LHU athletics even more competitive. We’re excited to provide additional opportunities for current and future women student-athletes to compete at a high level.” Lock Haven’s support of women’s wrestling follows national trends as over a dozen states now sponsor a state women’s wrestling high school championship. Iowa State wrestling: David Carr seems ‘pretty intent on winning a gold medal’

CEDAR RAPIDS — Freshman wrestler David Carr came into Iowa State already having made one world team. He was a world cadet bronze medalist in 2016. This last weekend in Las Vegas, he made his second world team — the junior world team at 74 kilograms. “It shows that he’s pretty good and he’s pretty intent on winning a gold medal at his respective level,” Iowa State Coach Kevin Dresser said Tuesday at Iowa State’s Tailgate Tour at the Marriott Hotel. “When David has that expectation, we have that expectation. He went and did what he was supposed to do.”

The coaching staff knew they were getting a blue-chip recruit when they got Carr. He was rated as a top-five pound-for-pound recruit out of high school and No. 1 at his weight. “David is very coachable,” Dresser said. “He’s a pleaser, and since he’s been here, he’s become more open-minded. Sometimes when you come in and you’re really, really good, it’s hard to be open-minded to anything because you’ve had so much success, you kind of think you know everything. David comes in and he’s really coachable and he doesn’t think he knows everything. He wants to learn to more. “When you get a guy like that, shoot, he can really take off.” Carr will wrestle at 157 pounds next season for the Cyclones. Freije Tabbed to Guide Fairmont State Wrestling Resurgence

Fairmont State University Director of Athletics Chad Fowler introduced Chris Freije as head coach of the newly added Wrestling program on Monday. During his career as an assistant and head coach, Freije has helped coach three conference championship teams (two NCAA II, one NAIA), and eight individual conference champions (six NCAA II, two NAIA). Thus far in his coaching career, Freije has also coached a total of 28 national qualifiers, 12 All-Americans and two National Champions between the NCAA Division II and NAIA ranks. Freije comes to Fairmont State after serving as Head Wrestling Coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College during the past two seasons. After recruiting for his first year on the job, KWC competed in its first NCAA Division II season in 2018-19, with three wrestlers advancing to the consolation round of the NCAA Super Regionals in St. Charles, Missouri.

“I am thrilled to take over as head coach of the re-launched wrestling program at Fairmont State,” said Freije. “I truly feel this program can be a sleeping giant. Our goal is going to be to keep successful West Virginia wrestlers in state, and to keep successful regional wrestlers in the region. Prior to taking over at Kentucky Wesleyan, Freije helped launch the wrestling program at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas. During his tenure at Cloud County Community College, Freije recruited the program’s inaugural roster, which included over 20 student-athletes. Cloud County’s inaugural season was capped with six wrestlers qualifying for the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championships. Before starting the program at Cloud County, Freije was an assistant coach at Lindsey Wilson College, an NAIA program in Columbia, Kentucky, from 2014 to 2016. During his tenure he helped designed and implement a year-round strength program while also coordinating the program’s community involvement. Seven wrestlers from Lindsey Wilson reached the NAIA National Tournament during Freije’s tenure, including three that earned NAIA All-America honors in 2016.
