Couple inducted into National Wrestling Hall of Fame after decades of teaching ‘love’ for the sport

The last four decades have been busy for Lucy and Randall Stowe, two longtime York County residents. Since Lucy, 64, and Randall, 66, got married on Independence Day in 1975, they have hosted more than 30 European exchange students and volunteered with and coached more than 1,600 children in youth wrestling clubs and tournaments. In April, the couple’s dedication of many hours, days and weeks to a single sport — wrestling — earned them a joint induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. They are the third couple in the Virginia chapter to receive a joint recognition, Lucy Stowe said. “It teaches kids how to achieve their goals,” Randall said.
Life
Lucy and Randall are both from Danville, but they met while attending Danville Community College in the early 1970s. Both have experience in wrestling — Lucy through casual roughhousing and Randall while on teams in grade school — but found their place in coaching and volunteering. IOWA WESLEYAN TO ADD MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WRESTLING

Mount Pleasant, Iowa – May 8, 2019 – Iowa Wesleyan University Athletic Director Derek Zander is pleased to announce that men’s and women’s wrestling will be added to the slate of athletic programs offered at Iowa Wesleyan University during the 2020-21 academic year. The search for a head coach will begin immediately. Within the Tiger Athletics strategic plan, “Committing to Excellence,” a significant focus is the growth and expansion of the athletic department. The athletic department has expanded from 10 NCAA Division III intercollegiate programs to 14 over the past two years – with men’s and women’s wrestling being the 5th and 6th programs added in three years. IW will be the first NCAA Division III University in the State of Iowa to sponsor women’s wrestling.

“This is a historic development for IW intercollegiate athletics department during a significant time in the life of the University,” said IW President Steve Titus. “IW is relentless in its pursuit to create the best and most dynamic student experience possible. The addition of women’s and men’s wrestling provides exceptional opportunities for students and responds to a growing demand. IW is committed to leading the movement to provide female student-athletes the opportunity to compete in wrestling at the collegiate level.” “We are excited to announce the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling at Iowa Wesleyan,” said Athletic Director Derek Zander. “Men’s wrestling is very popular in our region, and it could not be a better time to add women’s wrestling as it is one of the fastest growing high school programs across the country. In the winter of 2019, the State of Iowa hosted its first women’s high school state championship. Beat the Streets benefit raises $1.3 million

NEW YORK, May 13, 2019 — The excitement of a night of world-class wrestling at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, in which a sold-out, record-breaking crowd of 5,000 was treated to 13 electrifying matches, spilled over into the post-event Beat the Streets Benefit Celebration at The Wilson on Monday. We couldn’t me more pleased and can’t wait to grow this even bigger next year.”

Kyle Borshoff named Pipe Dream’s Coach of the Year

Following an abrupt coaching change in the middle of last year’s wrestling season, Kyle Borshoff suddenly found himself at the helm of the Binghamton University wrestling program. Borshoff had assistant coaching experience at BU and American University beforehand, but had never held a head coaching position. It was a test he was thrust into almost instantaneously.
Fifteen months later, the BU wrestling team completed its most successful season in several years. The team has gone 19-8 in dual competition since Borshoff took over the program, including a 10-3 record in the 2018-19 season. The Bearcats finished off this year’s campaign on a 10-meet winning streak, sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and placed sixth at the EIWA Championships, a program record. In recognition of his success, Borshoff has been named Pipe Dream’s Coach of the Year for the 2018-19 school year.
“We didn’t really know what to expect coming into the season,” Borshoff said on Pipe Dream’s Bearcast. “We started out with an extremely challenging schedule. Rest of the story at

Addition and growth of Kansas high school girls wrestling spurs consequential kinks

TDR Editor’s Notes ; This sounds like challenging opportunities to provide experiences to a wider group of students. Many and if not most of these incoming wrestlers will be very new to the sport. Thus the chance to impact then with lessons of sportsmanship, competition and the rewards from hard work and dedication.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Doug Kretzer has been answering a lot of questions since April 26. The McPherson High wrestling coach was the driving force behind the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s adoption of girls wrestling at its latest board of directors meeting. Implementation is official, but the work is not done. As coaches come to Kretzer wondering how girls wrestling will affect their programs, he welcomes it.

The biggest question Kretzer gets is, “How do I grow my own program?” Coaches have watched McPherson’s girls program build over the past three years — Kretzer’s squads have won each of the unofficial state tournaments — and they want a piece of the pie. He said it starts with marketing to all girls, not just the ones coaches believe would be good wrestlers. Then, program officials must present a good message of equality with the boys.“You can only recruit them until practice starts,” Kretzer said. “Then they have to want to be there.” But as girls programs continue to gain momentum across Kansas, more logistical challenges could present themselves. The most pressing: How to handle practices. Rest of the story at https://www.kansas.com/sports/varsity-kansas/article230271299.html?mc_cid=44b1067232&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
