Behind a committed Moore, LHU wrestling’s future is bright

From Day 1, Scott Moore had a vision, one that continues to motivate the Bald Eagles head wrestling coach.
MAT-TOWN, U.S.A. – “Listen, no matter what happens, I want to be at Lock Haven.” Those were the words spoken by Scott Moore as he wrapped up a day of interviewing for the vacant head coaching position at Lock Haven University in the summer of 2013. Moore, the interim head coach at the time, was talking about why he moved back to central Pennsylvania, and why he wanted to be the next head wrestling coach in Mat-Town U.S.A. He had a vision. At the time, it was a vision only he could dream of and only he could construct.
Days later, on July 1, 2013, Moore was named the Bald Eagles head coach, and he committed to lead the team. He committed to build on that vision from day one. Today, six seasons later, he is just as committed to the vision and to the future of LHU wrestling. With five All-Americans, 25 NCAA Division I national qualifiers, two Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Championships and back-to-back top-20 NCAA finishes, Moore is still building on that vision. Call it “The Rise” if you will, but Moore has never been more excited about what lies ahead. Moore has embraced every aspect of coaching at The Haven, and without question, that regard for what LHU is and what it stands for has strengthened his background, coaching ability and helped cement Lock Haven’s rise back to the national stage. Moore embraced the local community and, in return, it embraced Moore. The community – filled with knowledgeable wrestling-crazed supporters – stood behind and supported what Moore was building. Augsburg to add women’s wrestling as varsity sport

TDR Ed’s Note ; First women’s college team in Minnesota as the opportunities keep expanding.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
FACTS ABOUT WOMEN’S WRESTLING

17350

MINNEAPOLIS — Augsburg University is continuing its tradition of being a pioneer in women’s athletics by creating a varsity women’s wrestling team, which will begin competition in the 2019-20 school year with Max Mejia as its first head coach, the university has announced. By being the only collegiate institution in Minnesota to currently sponsor a varsity women’s wrestling program, Augsburg continues to lead the field in adding athletic opportunities for women. Women’s wrestling will be the 22nd varsity sport offered at Augsburg, and the 12th Auggie women’s sport. In 1995, Augsburg was the first college or university in the Midwest to sponsor a varsity women’s ice hockey team, and in 2014, Augsburg became the first collegiate institution in Minnesota to sponsor a varsity women’s lacrosse team. “I am proud that our outstanding intercollegiate athletics program will once again set a new standard for offering competition opportunities for women,” said Augsburg President Dr. Paul Pribbenow. “Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, and it is especially fitting that Augsburg — with its nationally recognized men’s wresting program — will join this movement. I look forward to our women’s wrestling program recruiting top-notch student-athletes from across the country and competing at the highest level.” Rest of the story at https://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2019/4/15/wres041519.aspx

Ocean Springs Greyhounds fighting to keep wrestling alive in Mississippi

TDR Ed.’s Note ; Student-Athletes in Mississippi need to have more wrestling opportunities.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Greyhounds are currently the only high school wrestling team in MS.
By Tristan Ruppert| April 22, 2019 at 5:31 PM CDT – Updated April 23 OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) – Mississippi is the only state in the country without high school sanctioned wrestling but one Coast school is trying to change that. WLOX Reporter Tristan Ruppert once wrestled as an Ocean Springs Greyhound but his time with the team was anything but easy. Ruppert didn’t know if each year he wrestled would be the last year for the program. That was five years ago and the team is still fighting to keep wrestling alive in Mississippi. “Getting your hand raised on the mat is the greatest feeling because you know you’ve worked hard to get to that position and you came out on top,” said wrestler Bryce Bizzack. ‘Hard work always pays off.’ Fresno State athlete has found success in wrestling and football

By Anthony Galaviz April 22, 2019
Fresno State junior Josh Hokit, the Bulldogs’ dual-sport standout, almost gave up on wrestling. Good thing he didn’t: He placed fifth at last month’s NCAA wrestling championships to earn All-American honors. After finishing up spring football practice, Hokit revealed what pushed him: “I became obsessed with the sport and everything that came along with that with weight lifting, wrestling, film. I took it all in and that’s all I thought about everyday. That’s what I really wanted to accomplish was be on that podium in March. Hard work always pays off.”
His obsession was a 180-degree turn from earlier thinking he might give up the sport to focus on football. What changed? “I had a gut feeling” there was more to prove in wrestling, Hokit said.
