Ex-Huskers Burroughs, Green in top shape ahead of World Wrestling Championships
Even the most elite athletes cannot always avoid the injury bug.
In the span of 24 hours last week, Team USA wrestling lost two World Wrestling Championship qualifiers, but that did not stop former Nebraska wrestlers James Green and Jordan Burroughs from holding an open workout at the Hendricks Training Center on Friday as they prepare to leave for Budapest, Hungary.
Team USA lost Nahshon Garrett and female wrestler Alli Ragan earlier this week. Ragan became a six-time world qualifier in June at Lincoln’s Final X. “Coach (Bryan) Snyder and I really keep our eye on our guys, especially James and Jordan leading up to the world championships and the team trials,” said Husker coach Mark Manning, who still helps Green and Burroughs train. “There is time in between, so there is always a tough dynamic to train hard enough, but make sure they aren’t going to get hurt.”
There was almost a four-month layover for Green and Burroughs, who were two of the first seven to qualify for Team USA in Lincoln. “There is a fine line to know when to pull back, and we are pretty familiar just because we coached these guys in college and we know their limit. We know where we can push them,” Manning added.
After the Huskers held a practice open to fans, Burroughs and Green hit the practice mats one last time before traveling overseas Monday. W&M looks to ex-wrestler for contagious countermove after being outscored 113-17 in past two games
WILLIAMSBURG — In its past two games, William & Mary has been outscored 113-17. The Tribe fell 62-17 at Virginia Tech before losing at James Madison 51-0 last Saturday.
This seems to be the time for a guy who wants to get into mixed martial arts following graduation to demonstrate a defiant countermove that’s contagious.
Center Nick Wimmer, a 6-foot-2, 305-pound junior, won more than 150 matches as a high school wrestler in Winston-Salem, N.C., and sees martial arts as an extension of what he did on the mat and what he does for the Tribe (1-2, 0-1 CAA).
Wimmer is the only returning starter on an offensive line that’s struggled to come around, in part because of the competition W&M has faced. JMU, ranked No. 2 in the FCS, registered nine tackles for losses against the Tribe, as did Virginia Tech.
“Hopefully, as they gain experience and keep working together and kind of trust each other and trust themselves and not let things disrupt them … then it’s just a matter of maturity,” coach Jimmye Laycock, whose Tribe play their home opener against No. 24 Colgate (3-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m., said of his offensive linemen.
Wimmer trained in the martial arts while wrestling in high school and also has participated in Beach Wrestling, a branch of USA Wrestling. Beach Wrestling involves competition in a circle on sand. The object is to remove your opponent from the circle, or take him down. “If I had to say anything to high school kids, especially offensive linemen, defensive linemen, I would say, ‘Wrestle in high school,’ ” Wimmer said. His recommendation is related to the conditioning required of wrestlers, and the balance, leverage, strength and strategy necessary to prevail on the mat, sand and field. Q&A with Life Pacific College Assistant Coach Brady Bersano; Beginning of a Tradition by Al Fontes
TDR Editor’s Notes; This is from The California Wrestler and while that publication covers wrestling way, way, far away on the other coast this is an interesting article about a new college wrestling team and how they are working to build a tradition of the sport at their school. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“BEGINNING OF A TRADITION”

Earlier this year, Life Pacific College in San Dimas announced the fielding of a newly established wrestling program in the Southern California area, which as of this writing is scheduled to begin competition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (aka, NAIA) division during the 2018 – ’19 season. Leading this program is former Cal Baptist Assistant Coach Arsen Aleksanyan, a well respected wrestling figure in the state of California and abroad. Joining his staff is one of his top performers at Cal Baptist in Brady Bersano of Clovis. While at Cal Baptist, Brady earned NCAA All-American and was a national finalist. In addition, he did very well in the classroom and was a two-time NCAA Academic All-American in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Prior to Cal Baptist, Brady was a two-time California Community College State Champion and All-American at Fresno City College, earning the Outstanding Wrestler Award in the process. Moreover, he earned Academic All-American honors twice for Fresno City and was chosen the Fresno City College Male Athlete of the Year in 2013. According to Coach Aleksanyan, he initially recruited Brady to California Baptist from Fresno City and was an integral part of his development, both on the mat and getting to know him as a student/athlete.

Big Bend to return men’s wrestling, introduce women’s wrestling
MOSES LAKE- Last time Big Bend had a wrestling program was the 1994-1995 school year. After a 23-year hiatus, Big Bend will return its men’s wrestling program and introduce a women’s wrestling program. Big Bend released the news late last week.
Wrestling has been a big deal in the local area for years. Moses Lake, Othello, Warden and Royal among others, all have contending wrestling programs. Even girl’s wrestling has solid footing, with Othello and Warden consistently produce fantastic female wrestlers. Other programs such as Moses Lake, Ephrata and Wahluke boasted excellent female wrestlers this last state tournament.
The decision was explained by Athletic Director Mark Poth as a multi-layered one. “We feel as an athletic department that we can continue to grow that success with the expansion of our athletic offerings and with the extreme interest in both men’s and women’s wrestling in our service area it feels like a win-win situation,” Poth said. Poth continues to make moves confidently as an athletic director. He started with the coaching staff, hiring four new head coaches last season, which saw three playoff droughts of more than 10 years topple. Fort LeBoeuf wrestler Gorring commits to Appalachian State
Bison senior to compete for Division I program.
Julian Gorring is the latest Fort LeBoeuf wrestler who plans to compete for a Division I program in North Carolina. Gorring, a PIAA Class 2A 182-pound finalist this past season, has verbally committed to Appalachian State. The Bison senior said he made his decision last weekend while visiting the Boone, North Carolina, campus and Mountaineers coach Johnmark Bentley. “Honestly, I’m so excited to commit before my senior (season at LeBoeuf) because there’s been so much on my plate,” Gorring said. “It’ll be nice not to travel every weekend (for recruiting). Now, I can focus on academics and getting that state title.”
Should that happen next spring for Gorring, he’d further mimic former teammate Charles Lenox, the 2016 LeBoeuf graduate who won that year’s 2A state title at 120. Lenox will be a redshirt sophomore for the 2018-19 North Carolina State Wolfpack. Gorring has another perk going into his last season as a Bison. Not only does he plan to compete at college wrestling’s highest level, but he anticipates workouts with someone who has experience at it. Nick Milano has joined the staff of LeBoeuf coach Jason Beer. Milano, a Cathedral Prep graduate who also wrestled for Clarion University, was in charge at Iroquois for the past three seasons.

Long Island University to unify all sports programs into NCAA Division I, including wrestling
Long Island University will combine each of its sports programs at its two campuses — LIU Brooklyn, and LIU Post — into a single NCAA Division I program as part of a “One LIU” initiative announced Wednesday at the New York Athletic Club.
All intercollegiate sports programs at LIU Post in Brookville, NY, which now compete in NCAA Division II — including the wrestling program — will now participate in NCAA Division I, effective in the 2019-20 academic year, according to Newsday.
Starting next fall, the LIU wrestling program — and all other athletic programs now in existence at either or both campuses — will compete under the name “Long Island University”, and wear uniforms with a blue and gold color scheme. Students and alumni will help decide a new nickname, the school said. LIU Post wrestling will maintain its competitive schedule already announced for this fall.
Under the “One LIU” initiative, no sports will be eliminated. In fact, LIU is adding women’s ice hockey and women’s water polo to its roster of intercollegiate sports. Rest of the story at http://intermatwrestle.com/articles/20598
