Virginia Tech’s Hunter Bolen tabbed ACC Freshman of the Year; NC State’s Pat Popolizio voted ACC Wrestling Coach of the Year
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com)—NC State senior Michael Macchiavello, Virginia Tech freshman Hunter Bolen and NC State head coach Pat Popolizio were named the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler, Freshman and Coach of the Year, the league announced Wednesday. All three awards were determined by a vote of the ACC’s six wrestling head coaches. Macchiavello, a fifth year senior from Monroe, North Carolina, capped an outstanding senior season by winning the national championship at 197 pounds. Macchiavello finished the year with a 22-3 record, including 11-2 in duals. He defeated Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught, 3-1, in the NCAA Championship finals to claim the title. Macchiavello, the NCAA fourth seed in the championship, and Haught, who was seeded third, became the first pair of ACC wrestlers to meet in the NCAA finals. Macchiavello’s national title was the 18th by an ACC wrestler and the first since former NC State standout Nick Gwiazdowski won the heavyweight crown in 2015. “We are very proud of what Michael has accomplished, both on the mat and in the classroom,” said Popolizio. “He exemplifies the mentality, work ethic, and lifestyle needed to be successful and has reaped the benefits of trusting the process. All-American Justin Oliver Transfers to NC State

TDR Editor’s Note; Great to see another quality wrestler to come to North Carolina.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Oliver was a three-time NCAA Qualifier with a 92-23 record at Central Michigan
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State wrestling head coach Pat Popolizio has announced the transfer of All-American Justin Oliver to the Wolfpack. A graduate transfer from Central Michigan, Oliver will have one season of eligibility remaining.
Oliver was a three-time NCAA Qualifier at 149 pounds for Central Michigan, and earned All-American honors in his redshirt-freshman season in 2016. He was seeded ninth or better in the last three NCAA Championships, falling one win short of All-American honors each of the last two seasons. For his career, he is 10-6 at the NCAAs.
“This is an exciting time for NC State Wrestling,” said Popolizio. “Justin’s experiences as a student-athlete, coupled with his already decorated wrestling resume, will have an immediate impact for Wolfpack Wrestling this upcoming season. Justin’s style mirrors our mentality, and he will be fun and exciting for Wolfpack Nation to watch.”
A Davidson, Michigan native, Oliver went a combined 92-23 at Central Michigan the last three seasons, and finished the 2017-18 campaign ranked #11 nationally in the final FloWrestling rankings.
Oliver went 28-7 this past season, and was ranked as high as #3 for six straight polls by FloWrestling. He entered the 2018 NCAA Championships as the No. 6 seed, and went 3-2. Also this past season, he won the Cliff Keen Invite and was second at the Midlands Championships.

Hall of Fame Banquet May 20th

TDR Editor’s Note; As we posted on here earlier the North Carolina Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Induction Banquet will be held at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill. Tickets are still available. Take a look at some of last year’s banquet. At the beginning Rex Wells, the President of the group reads a list of all the inductees year by year. That can give one a sense of the history of the event.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Last year’s Banquet was filmed and can be seen on the link below
