Falcons Fly Over Green Terror in Brunk’s 200th Win

Editor’s Note; Great to see a successful college coach recognized and the number of dual meet wins mentioned.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
WESTMINSTER, Md. – No. 15 Messiah wrestling won eight of 10 matches and ran away from McDaniel on Wednesday night, 35-9. The win moved Messiah to 16-5 on the season, it also gave head coach Bryan Brunk his 200th career victory.
Big Numbers
Messiah’s strength was on display throughout, and five of their wins were by either major, tech fall, or pin. All five of those instances came in a row, too, starting with Stephen Maloney at 149. His tech fall over Scott Miser came in just 2:38, and both Matt Pangle and Jeff Hojnacki followed with pins. The win for Pangle moved him to 12-8 on the season, and it was also his eighth fall on the year. The fall was the 12th of the season for Hojnacki.
Ben Swarr (174) continued his rebound from his two-match losing streak with his third win in a row– fall, decision, and now tech fall. Derek Beitz followed with a 16-2 major.
At 197, Kyler Koser, the team’s leader in wins with 38, had the night off and Victor DeFrance took advantage by bumping up a weight to win 8-7 over Jake Pooton.
Milestone
Two days before former Messiah wrestling coach Neil Turner is to be inducted into the Falcons’ Hall of Honor, his successor, Bryan Brunk, continued to push his program-record win total to new heights. His overall record is now 200-110 across 14-plus seasons, good for a win percentage of .645 that is second only to Turner (131-70; .652). Kasper Picks Up Win 100; Duke Falls to UNC

Editor’s Note; Another late season rivalry match with neighboring teams.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Duke wrestling redshirt senior Jacob Kasper picked up his 100th career victory and 31st of the season with a dominant 16-1 technical fall at North Carolina Wednesday evening. The No. 24 Tar Heels came away with the 28-14 victory in the dual. The Blue Devils fall to 6-7 overall and 1-4 against ACC foes, while North Carolina improves to 9-10 overall and 3-2 in league action. Third-ranked Kasper closed out a tough night out in strong fashion for the Blue Devils. The Lexington, Ohio native led 1-0 after a penalty point against Andrew Gunning and then went to work and led 14-1 after two periods. He needed just 24 more seconds in the third period to earn his seventh technical fall of the year. Kasper is now 31-2 on the season and 100-36 in his career. He is on pace to break the Duke single-season wins record, needing six more victories to surpass John Barone’s mark of 36. Those six wins also would put him at second on the career wins list. Pamlico’s Armstrong wins state wrestling crown

Editor’s Note; Congratulation to Coach Kevin Knox and his state champion.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Sophomore finished season 27-4
GREENSBORO – The big stage wasn’t too much for Pamlico sophomore Javon Armstrong.
Armstrong defeated Rosewood junior Nyterrius Williams 10-4 on Saturday to capture the NCHSAA 1-A state heavyweight championship at the Greensboro Coliseum. Armstrong, who was 1-2 a year ago at states, finishes the season 27-4 after beating Williams for the third time this season. Williams winds up 37-12. “It’s awesome, overwhelming,” Williams said. Williams is only the second wrestler to bring home the gold in school history, which he said was simply “awesome.” “Especially him being a sophomore and it was the first time on the big stage, not to get star struck, it’s just phenomenal,” Pamlico coach Kevin Knox said. “Speechless. I don’t know what to say about it, but it’s awesome.” Rest of the story at http://www.newbernsj.com/sports/20180217/pamlicos-armstrong-wins-state-wrestling-crown
