Cornell Tops #24 North Carolina For Ninth Straight Win
TDR Editor’s Note; At a time when many of the end of the season dual meets are rivalries of neighboring school there are other special matches. The coach at Cornell was a National Champion for UNC a while back. His oldest son now wrestles for The Big Red which adds something more to the competition.

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell wrestling team won all the close matches early and added some bonus points late to earn a 32-6 win over No. 24 North Carolina on Friday evening at a sold-out Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red closed out dual season with a 13-2 record, while the Tar Heels fell to 9-11. Cornell won three one-point decisions in the first four contested bouts after the home team gained a forfeit to begin the match at 125. The early lead wasn’t necessary in the end, as the home team won seven of the nine contests and earned bonus points in the final two to earn its ninth straight win. The Big Red won consecutive decisions at 133 and 141 to set the tone, with Chaz Tucker coming out of a battle with Zach Sherman for a 4-3 win, and fourth-ranked Yianni Diakomihalis used riding time for the difference in a 7-6 triumph over No. 19 A.C. Headlee. Rest of the story at http://cornellbigred.com/news/2018/2/16/wrestling-tops-24-north-carolina-for-ninth-straight-win.aspx?mc_cid=de47f1993b&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

TDR Editor’s Notes; OK, the answer is Keiser University is in West Palm Beach, Florida. Will admit that we were not familiar Keiser and had to look that up. Great to see more wrestling coming to Florida. They will compete in the NAIA. Wrestling is growing in wrestling with 58 school currently offering the sport. TDR Editor Notes; Good step up in recognizing wrestlers and wrestling in the post season.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA has released updated standings for the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Awards that will be awarded in March at the respective Division I, II and III Wrestling Championships. The inaugural NCAA Wrestling Awards were presented at the 2012 wrestling championships. The three awards, given in each division, honor the Most Dominant Wrestler as well as the student-athletes that have accumulated the most falls and the most technical falls throughout the course of the regular and postseasons. For falls and tech falls to be counted they must come against opponents in the same division. Ties in the two categories are broken based on the aggregate time.

The Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships are set to take place this Saturday, March 3, at Carmichael Arena on the University of North Carolina’s campus in Chapel Hill, N.C. ACC Championships
TDR Editor’s Notes; In the semifinals of a smaller (6 teams) conference tournament with the big consequence of who becomes eligible to continue on this season to the national championships in two weeks at Cleveland. The impressive scoreboard in the center of Carmichael arena displays the team scores which are updated after every match. That makes clear the meaning of every match. Action on two mats may seem quiet for fans used to the 8 – 10 mats at a high school state championship but the wrestling is intense. At every moment when there is at least one match in action it is hard to turn away as one can miss a fast blaze of action and change in scoring. It is definitely better than seeing a dual match. It is also impressive hearing so many Virginia Tech fans traveling to support their team. More details later.

Colorado Mesa Adds Women’s Wrestling
TDR Notes; Great to see another school adding wrestling. One of 12 new Women’s programs starting in the fall. Yet this announcement focuses on “being the only one in the conference and the sport has less than 50 Women’s teams.” I think they should have focused on the growth of the sport.

CMU IS FIRST IN RMAC AND ONE OF FEWER THAN 50 IN THE COUNTRY TO OFFER VARSITY-LEVEL PROGRAM
Grand Junction, Colo. — Colorado Mesa University today announced the addition of women’s wrestling to its portfolio of 28 varsity teams that compete at the Division II level. The Mavericks will field an all-female team beginning fall 2018. College Championships
TDR Editor’s Notes; Last weekend the Junior colleges had their national championships tournament. This weekend the ACC will be held at UNC in Chapel Hill with matches to start at 11:00. Other Division I conferences and Regional tournaments for Divisions II and III will be held to determine the qualifiers for their National Championships. Divsion II will be in Cedar Falls on the 8th & 9th while Division III will be in Cleveland on the same days. The Division I Nationals will also be in Cleveland but a week later. These events are well covered and fans will easily seek out information about these events. With that said we explain why we direct our efforts towards other wrestling stories that get less notice yet are significant to the growth of our sport.
