Military and wrestling have common bonds

Editor’s Note; Another look at an interesting connection between these two intense competitive activities. Wrestlers can be good recruits.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
When wrestlers take to the mats today and Thursday at the 43rd annual Medina Invitational Tournament, talent will shine bright. In some cases, so will mental fortitude, which just might be the difference between a win and loss. Wrestling and the military have had a longstanding marriage, which is why many successful personnel can trace earlier accomplishments to the 710-square foot circle in their high school gymnasium. “I believe that it is the one sport in high school that can prepare a student-athlete for what it takes to be a Marine,” said retired staff sergeant Ryan Helton. “As far as the physical standpoint, discipline, mental toughness and sacrifice, all those qualities really intertwine with each other.” The 1996 Buckeye graduate should know, he sees it every day in his son Isaiah Helton, who wrestles for Medina and who will join the Marines in July. MIAA to Sponsor Men’s Wrestling Starting with 2018-19 Academic Year

Editor’s Note; Another encouraging step to encourage schools to add or re-instate wrestling as a collegiate sport.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
FREELAND, Mich. – After a 35-year hiatus, men’s wrestling will resume as a sponsored sport by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association for the 2018-19 academic year. The MIAA Presidents Council voted in favor of adding men’s wrestling during their December 5, 2017 meeting. “The MIAA is excited to reinstate wrestling as a sponsored sport,” MIAA Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook said. “This opportunity allows our member institutions to provide a championship experience for student-athletes currently competing at the intercollegiate level. It is a priority for the MIAA to foster the Division III experience on our member campuses, and adding wrestling will allow us to do so. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate the successes of over 100 student-athletes both on the mat and in the classroom.” Currently, four MIAA schools sponsor wrestling: Adrian, Alma, Olivet, and Trine. Of the four, Olivet is the lone institution that has continually sponsored wrestling and has not dropped the program since first offering the sport for the 1964-65 campaign. Adrian’s first season was in 1959, with the program halting in 1984 before resuming for the 2015-16 academic year. Alma first sponsored wrestling in 1969 before discontinuing in 1984; the Scots resumed for the 2011-12 season. Trine has offered wrestling since the 2004-05 academic year. Wrestling Improves To 2-0 In SoCon

Editor’s Note; Appalachian State is looking stronger and these are some recent results in the efforts.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Appalachian State’s wrestling team started with a statement-making win from Gavin Londoff, and seven consecutive wins capped the Mountaineers’ 30-6 victory at Gardner-Webb in a Southern Conference dual meet Wednesday. Appalachian (4-3, 2-0 SoCon) moved into a first-place tie with Chattanooga after claiming wins in eight of 10 matches against the Runnin’ Bulldogs, who also began the night with a 1-0 conference record. App State and Gardner-Webb (1-5, 1-1) split the first four matches, but the Mountaineers had a 9-6 lead thanks to a 15-2 major decision at 149 pounds from Londoff (four points) and a 17-1 technical fall at 174 pounds from Forrest Przybysz (five points). Arizona State University looks to add women’s wrestling team

Editor’s Note; Arizona State could be the second Division I women’s team. They have a female Olympic wrestler on the current team. Expand the opportunities and positive publicity for wrestling.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
PHOENIX — Arizona State University was one of 11 schools to apply to the NCAA on Tuesday to add a recognized women’s wrestling team. According to Wrestle Like A Girl — an organization that encourages women to take up the sport — ASU was the only Division I school to apply for NCAA Emerging Sport status. The NCAA was expected to review the schools’ applications next month. If the bids are approved, the schools will be invited to give a presentation as the next step in the process. ASU has had only one female wrestler. Kelsey Campbell made the men’s team after excelling at the sport at Milwaukie High School in Oregon. “I don’t think any college wrestler walks into a room and expects to see a girl,” she told ASU News in 2012. “Some welcomed me with open arms and some didn’t want me there. There was a lot of room to learn and grow but it made me really tough.”
