Donahue Earns Degree, Hits Mat to Face Top-10 Foe Friday Night
Editor’s Note; This story is from last month yet a good one about a true competitive ‘student-athlete’ from N.C. State.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
RALEIGH, N.C. – Not only will the NC State wrestling team be in action Friday night, as the #6 Wolfpack travels to #12 Nebraska for a key out-of-conference dual, but NC State’s Fall Graduation also takes place on Friday. That posed a bit of a dilemma for Beau Donahue. Not only is Donahue the Pack’s starter at 149 pounds in his final season, but the redshirt-senior from Centreville, Va., is also earning his undergrad degree this week. “I think my mom might be more upset then anybody that I will not be walking Friday,” said Donahue. “I want to do it (walk in the graduation ceremony) more for my family then myself to be honest. They have helped me in so many ways over the years get to this part of my life. I actually worked it out where I will get to be in the ceremony this Spring, with a few of my teammates at the same time, so that will be nice.” Donahue will be earning his degree in business administration, with a concentration in information technology. Lakeland to add women’s wrestling as a varsity sport
Editor’s Notes; The state of Wisconsin is considering adding women’s wrestling as a varsity sport on the high school level as well.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Lakeland University will become Wisconsin’s first college or university to field a team in one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports – women’s wrestling. Lakeland will become a member of the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA), the national governing body for women’s college wrestling. The Muskies will field their first team in the fall of 2018. Head men’s wrestling coach Ben Chapman will also coach the women’s program, and Jared Schaaf, assistant coach for Lakeland’s men’s team, will serve as assistant coach. Women’s wrestling has seen steady growth, and today almost 15,000 females wrestle at the high school level, according to the National Collegiate Wrestling Association. Since 2004, women’s wrestling has been recognized as an Olympic sport. The sport’s growth is especially evident in Wisconsin. This February, Wisconsin will host its first girls state wrestling tournament, joining a handful of states who hold a state tournament for females. This past year, the Wisconsin Women’s National Team took second in the high school junior division at the nation’s largest girls wrestling tournament. Southwestern College Adds Women’s Wrestling
Editor’s Notes; Another new program that will be started in Kansas next season. Hopefully they will then add a men’s team.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
WINFIELD, Kan. — The Southwestern College Board of Trustees has approved the addition of a women’s wrestling program, with the inaugural season slated for 2018-2019. The college has launched a search for a coach to build the team. “After much deliberation and research, and in full conversation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) we are enthusiastic to add women’s wrestling at SC,” said Brad Andrews, Southwestern College President. “We are excited for the class of students that the sport will bring to campus and proud to be one of the first schools in Kansas to award scholarships to these student-athletes.” High school and club wrestling for girls has grown rapidly in the past decade. Initially in Texas, New Mexico and California, now the sport is experiencing considerable growth throughout the country. Institutions of higher education are beginning to respond to the emerging sport by offering programs for student athletes to continue at a collegiate level.Rest of the story at http://www.buildersports.com/article/2927.php?mc_cid=443c32ec88&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
GRAPPLING WITH EQUALITY: IS WOMEN’S WRESTLING HEADED TO THE NCAA?
Editor’s Notes; While it is great to see the growth of wrestling with women’s programs on all levels we wonder if the athletic directors and college presidents who dislike wrestling (Boise State is one example) will use this in a negative manner. They could reason that well since we can not have wrestling for both we must drop the men’s team. I hope not but it is something to keep in mind.

In late August, wrestling fans from all corners of the globe descended on Paris to witness greatness at the 2017 world championships. They weren’t disappointed. In a sport of constant grappling, one American proved untouchable in the arena on Boulevard de Bercy. Helen Maroulis captured her third consecutive international title to go along with a world championship in 2015 and Olympic gold at Rio in 2016. In Paris the 25-year-old native of Rockville, Maryland, breezed through five competitors by a combined score of 53-0.
So, why doesn’t the NCAA let her wrestle?

By adding sports like lacrosse or wrestling, small St. Louis area colleges getting bigger
Editor’s Note; Interesting article about the trend of smaller schools adding sport teams, including wrestling, as they seek to grow their school’s enrollment. Someday the bigger universities will resume expanding opportunities.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The addition of wrestling to the menu of sports at Maryville University in 2011 occurred without fanfare but turned out to be a significant moment on the West County campus. A Hall of Fame coach was hired. The team became the first at the university to earn a No. 1 ranking. And the program has produced two individual Division II national champions. That decision also was the launching point for a massive transformation as Maryville has added numerous sports since that time, following a national trend that has seen many small colleges and universities expand their athletic offerings. Eight very cool and iconic locations to see great college wrestling this season
Editor’s Notes; This article is from at the start of the college season yet we include it as it shows some of the creative ideas coaches and wrestling fans are using to broaden positive exposure of wrestling.

By Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling |
You can credit Mike Novogratz and his Beat the Streets gang in New York City for this. Novogratz took a risk that people would like to watch wrestling in historic and well-known public places, and he created a buzz with the Beat the Streets Gala events in New York City. He started with the U.S.S. Intrepid Aircraft Carrier, then moved the event to Times Square and during the Keep Olympic Wrestling year, held international dual meets in Grand Central Terminal. Others were soon inspired. On November 14, 2016, the University of Iowa invited Oklahoma State to compete in historic Kinnick Stadium on the Iowa campus, and set the NCAA attendance record with a reported 42,287 in attendance. (I was there, and think it may have been even more). Other schools, such as Rutgers and Cornell College, have had matches in football stadiums. Many other colleges have hosted outdoor practices, wrestle-offs and dual meets. This has turned into a very fun way to enjoy college wrestling, and expose new people to the sport. A look at this year’s eight “non-traditional” locations to see college wrestling this year.

SAC to add men’s wrestling
Editor’s Note; Another conference adds wrestling as a recognized sport. The NAIA is ahead of the SEC in D-I.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Men’s wrestling has been approved as an official conference sport in the Sooner Athletic Conference, effective immediately, and the SAC is set to crown its first-ever champion this winter. Approval for the decision came Monday in a conference call vote by the league’s Council of Presidents. SAC Presidents also were unanimous in approving Indiana Tech and Lourdes (Ohio) University as associate members in wrestling, a move that instantly strengthens the SAC’s wrestling profile and helps the league meet minimum NAIA standards with six teams. “With four full-time members that sponsor men’s wrestling and the NAIA’s recent decision to give conferences a bigger role in determining national qualifiers, now is the perfect time that we begin to recognize wrestling in the Sooner Athletic Conference,” SAC Commissioner Stan Wagnon said. “It’s especially gratifying to add a national contender like Indiana Tech and an up-and-coming program in Lourdes to help us carry the SAC banner in this new endeavor.” Rest of the story at http://www.soonerathletic.org/article/3662.php?mc_cid=4a9c1b9cc2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
