Knights Wrestling Report

September/2012  By Coach Joe Baranik
The Knights Wrestling Team is in full attack mode as we start the pre-season workouts for the 2012/13 season.  It is an exciting time for St. Andrews Wrestling (SAW), as we embark on our 7th year of having a program since 1970.  Five major factors that drive my enthusiasm; 1) Justin Hoover (All-American last year), has been hired as our first full-time assistant coach 2) we return All-American sophomore Denzel Vaughan 3) we brought in 12 new recruits 4) we are now officially in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and 4) we will host the NAIA National Qualifier on February 16.  Our 25 member squad has been working hard at 6:20 am on Monday, Wed. and Friday with running and strength training and developing their technique in the afternoons.
12 New Grapplers to SAU
The 12 new freshmen to the Knights Wrestling Team encompass five states (NC, MA, VA, GA, FL).  Some of the freshmen have good credentials coming out of high school and some are talents that are under the radar.
Jared Key, Fayetteville, NC comes out of Terry Sanford High School where he placed 6th in the NC State Tournament we anticipate Key wrestling at 197 lbs.
Mario Vega, Fort Myers, FL did his wrestling at Cypress Lake HS.  He was a 2x District Champion, 2x state qualifier and he went 10-1 at the prestigious Walt Disney Duals.  Vega   projects at 141 lbs.
Denzel Leggett, Newport News, VA wrestled for Warwick HS where he was a District Champion and a runner-up in the prestigious Ram Rumble.  Leggett looks to wrestle in the 197 lb weight class.
Andrew Bushey, Springfield, GA hails from Effingham County HS where he placed 4th in the Georgia State tournament and was a 2x Greco and Freestyle State Champion.  Bushey looks to compete at the 149lb. weight class.
Corey Craven, Southport, NC wrestled for South Brunswick HS.  Craven was a 2x state qualifier and placed 7th in the state.  He looks to wrestle at the 157 lb. weight class.
Dashon Eure, Virginia Beach, VA where he competed for Cox HS and won 130 career matches and placed 5th and 7th in the state tournament.
Randy Loving, Mechanicsville, VA competed for Lee-Davis HS
Matt Freed, Fort Myers, FL wrestled for S. Fort Myers HS
Russell Lindsay, Boston, MA comes back to SAU after a five year hiatus.  He wrestled for Whitman-Hanson HS.  He spent some time in the military and has come back in superb shape.  Lindsay looks to compete at 174 lbs.
Kaylin McCarson, Swansea, GA competed for Swansea HS and was a 2x Regional Champion and a 2x state qualifier.  McCarson is projected to wrestle in the 133 lb weight class.
Leon Golden, Newport News, VA wrestled for Warwick HS and was a teammate of Denzel Leggett.  Golden was a District Champion and projects at 174 lbs.
Davis Jones, Laurinburg, NC wrestled for Scotland High School and hopes to wrestle in the 285 lb. weight class.

Kalamazoo College Wrestling History

In our on-going search and compilation of college teams’ dual meet records we have recently completed Kalamazoo College’s history.  They started a team in the 1961-1962 season and wrestled 22 seasons before discontinuing the program in 1983.  The all-time records totaled up to 117 wins, 114 losses and 5 ties.  Carl Latora and George Acker are tied for most wins as both coaches led their teams to 41 wins in their time as the coach there.  As more records are compiled the results will be posted here.

DAVIDSON Announces Freshman Class

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson wrestling team has added five freshmen for the 2012-13 season, head coach Bob Patnesky announced Wednesday. The talented class, in which four of five were high school state tournament qualifiers, includes a local product, Patrick Devlin (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) and a class valedictorian, Nathaniel Powers (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain H.S.). Scott Cunningham (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) was a Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state champion, while Carson Stack (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) was a state semifinalist and Alexander Renzi (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew’s Episcopal) was a Maryland Prep state quarterfinalist. “We’re moving in the right direction with these newcomers combined with our returning guys,” said Patensky. “The biggest thing that is happening with our team is that they are gelling as one. Whether they are a freshman or a senior, it doesn’t matter. They are all trying to help each other and get to the same point.” Davidson returns 12 letterwinners and eight starters from last year’s squad. “As a program we’re starting to get some depth,” said Patensky. “Our biggest problem was numbers, which has made it difficult for us in dual meets. We’re in the process of fixing that and we’ll have at least 18 guys on our team this year. Hopefully we can grow that number over 20 in the next year or two.“
