CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – Levi Hopkins’ decision and a pin from Taye Ghadiali closed out a 24-13 Southern Conference dual win for visiting Campbell over Chattanooga on Sunday at Maclellan Gym.

After Noah Castillo put UTC on the board with a 4-1 decision at 149, Troy Nation responded for Campbell with a second period pin, topping Lincoln Heck (3:39).

The top contenders for a national title at 149 pounds, beginning with Yianni’s chase for history

The biggest storyline at 149 pounds this year is simple: Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis is on the hunt for his fourth national title, a feat that only four wrestlers in history have ever accomplished.

It’s a storyline Diakomihalis knows people want to talk about, one that could put his name in the record books forever. But it’s also a story that creates motivation for every wrestler in the country at his weight. He’s not just someone going for his fourth national title, he’s a wrestler going for his fourth title in a weight class full of contenders.

GREATEST EVER: Cael Sanderson | Dan Gable | Kyle Dake | Jordan Burroughs

“This whole summer, I was training to beat one guy, and that’s Yianni,” Wisconsin All-American Austin Gomez said in an interview with NCAA.com “I want to go out and make history and be the guy that stops Yianni from winning his fourth national title. I don’t think that’s been done, a guy being stopped from winning four.”

Gomez, a sixth-year junior for the Wisconsin Badgers, made progress toward that goal when he shocked the wrestling world with his upset win over the three-time champ in November, delivering Diakomihalis his first loss since 2017 in decisive fashion.

Gomez always believed he could pull off the upset, but he knows just what a big deal that win was for him, his team, and 149 pounds as a whole. It was a victory that put the rest of the weight class on notice.

“[That win] boosted my confidence a lot, just saying that like ‘Hey, he’s not the guy at this weight class, there’s a new dog in town, and that’s Austin Gomez,” Gomez said. “I think it just gave me so much more confidence, but it also put a target on my back because they know, all the 149-pounders know, now that this weight class got blown up after I beat Yianni.”

BIGGEST UPSET: Here’s how Austin Gomez topped the three-time champ

Despite the result of that bout, Diakomihalis held down the top ranking in the weight class. Gomez had taken a loss earlier this year to Iowa State’s Paniro Johnson, and he later took a second loss by injury default to Northwestern’s Yahya Thomas in late January. His notable wins though, … rest of story at NCAA.com/news/wrestling/article/2023-02-10/top-contenders-national-title-149-pounds-beginning-yiannis-chase-history

Five Wrestlers Scoop Up a W in PC’s First SoCon Victory on Senior Day

CLINTON, S.C. – Honoring the first two recruits to ever join the program for an extra-emotional senior day presentation prior to the Presbyterian College Men’s Wrestling team’s final Templeton appearance of the semester, Jacob Brasseur and Khalid Brinkley’s swansong foreshadowed a raucous finish in Clinton on Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hose achieved their first Southern Conference win of the year in a head-to-head war with Gardner-Webb, 19-18.

PC’s thrilling triumph over the Runnin’ Bulldogs served as a long-term reward for the many near misfires that the squad endured preceding Sunday’s match-clinching moment, a 13-1 MD dominated by heavyweight Malcolm Wiley against GW’s Abraham Preston. Zach Wells (174) and Dominic Chavez (125) both aided Presbyterian’s winning effort in a crucial SoCon affair, as did Brinkley and Brasseur in pulse-pounding finishes within minutes of each other, sending the Blue Hose faithful out of their seats in the process.

In contrast to a majority of PC’s conference duals – falling behind early, storming back from a looming deficit only to ultimately come up empty-handed – this time the roles reversed with Gardner-Webb forced to play catch-up thanks to a nine-point hole dug out by head coach Mark Cody‘s club. Just as it seemed that the Runnin’ Bulldogs would steal another one by taking their first lead in the penultimate bout at 18-15, Wiley ensured the ending was more storybook than catastrophe by grabbing arguably the biggest four points of Presbyterian’s season to rapturous applause.

None of the engulfed post-match adulation would have been possible without the early successes of Brinkley and Brasseur in their final Clinton chapter, the former gifting the Blue Hose six points on an exquisite sub-six-minute cradle pin and the latter earning a stringent 3-1 decision two contests later.

Those results – plus a match-opening 8-2 decision from Chavez – allowed coach Cody’s group to reach their largest advantage in any SoCon bout this season (nine points). Chavez, a junior who seemingly keeps gaining momentum … rest of story at GObluehose.com/news/2023/2/12/mens-wrestling-five-wrestlers-scoop-up-win-pcs-first-socon-victory-on-senior-day

Buckeye wrestling wins State Duals title; Brecksville, Rootstown second, Wadsworth third

Make no mistake. Finishing in the top three in the Division I State Duals is an accomplishment.

It’s also a bitter pill at the same time.

Brecksville finished second for the third consecutive season behind five-time reigning champion St. Edward in a 35-21 loss Saturday.

Wadsworth was third for the second season in a row with a 44-21 win over Dublin Coffman in the consolation final.

That said, the Grizzlies lost 41-14 to the Bees in the semifinals in consecutive seasons.

Wadsworth, Brecksville Wrestling:Bees, Grizzlies flex muscles at Suburban League Championships

“We walk out with a sour taste, and I think that says something,” Brecksville coach Todd Haverdill said. “The last couple years they just put it on us and we’re just like, ‘Hey, they’re better than us.’ Today, there were some matches that were tight and a couple could go the other way. We got a real interesting finish, so I’m really proud of their effort. But we didn’t come here to take a second.”

The Bees tied things with the host Eagles at 15 with six matches to go but fell behind down the stretch.

Brock Herman (144 pounds) and Max Vanadia (215) were the only three-time winners. David Zambounis (150) went 2-0.

“I mean, Ed’s is really good,” Herman said. “They’re the top team. They’re always going to be the top team coming in here, so you can’t be upset with second place. Come the (individual) state tournament, we’ll be ready.” … rest of story at AKRONBeaconjournal.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2023/02/12/greater-akron-area-wrestling-teams-strong-at-state-duals-tournaments-buckeye-brecksville-wadsworth

Logan Andrew and the Chattanooga Mocs claimed a key Southern Conference Friday night fight over Gardner-Webb

RESULTS
CHATTANOOGA—The Chattanooga Mocs and Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs went down to the wire in a pivotal Southern Conference match Friday night in Maclellan Gym. Sophomore heavyweight Logan Andrew dominated that final bout to secure the 19-16 victory for the Mocs.
“Logan really stepped up for the team in a big way,” Coach Kyle Ruschell shared. “He’s battling through some things and everyone on this team is grateful for that performance.
“Noah and Rocky both went out there with a purpose, to go out and dominate. That’s what you saw in those two matches. Noah and Rocky were here to wrestle and dominate somebody. Logan Andrew too. I mean, he shot four or five times and got three takedowns on the heavyweight.
“We need 10 guys that want to go out there and compete in front of a crowd.”
The Mocs return to Maclellan Gym Sunday hosting Campbell at 2 p.m.
WEIGHT-BY-WEIGHT
125: Logan Ashton 4-2 loss to Drew West
Logan got the first takedown on a strong effort. He was sent to his back but stayed locked to his man avoiding the takedown before working his way behind for the two. He was up 2-1 going into the second with West choosing down. West worked a reverse which proved to be the winning points adding riding time bonus.

133: Brayden Palmer 2-1 win over Todd Carter
Brayden registered the opening points with an escape to start the second. Time ran out on his shot to end the period. He rode his way into the bonus point to start the third before an escape with less than 10 seconds to go. He held on for the win.

5 } – Chandler Earns 50th Dual Victory, No. 24 Spartans Down No. 22 Indiana on Senior Night

Malczewski and Caffey Score Bonus-Point Wins to Clinch Historic Milestone

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Seventh-year head coach Roger Chandler secured the 50th dual victory of his career, and No. 24 Michigan State wrestling took home a 20-16 senior night win over the No. 22 Indiana Hoosiers on Friday inside Jenison Field House. MSU utilized back-to-back bonus point victories from redshirt senior Layne Malczewski and graduate Cameron Caffey to clinch the match at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.
Chandler became just the fourth head coach in Michigan State program history to reach the 50-win threshold, joining Spartan legends in Grady Peninger, Tom Minkel and Fendley Collins. Chandler also became the second-fastest head coach to reach that accomplishment, doing so in under seven seasons. MSU has experienced a resurgence in dual success under Chandler’s guidance, going from 2-11 in the season prior to his assumption of the top job to improving the team’s season win tally in each of the next three years. The Hoosier alum directed Michigan State’s first winning season in 14 years during the 2018-19 campaign, going 10-8 overall.
Following the victorious result, Michigan State climbs to 9-6 overall with a 2-6 mark at the finish line of the Big Ten dual season. Friday’s dual victory guaranteed that MSU would finish the season with a winning record for the second consecutive year. Indiana drops to 7-5 overall with a 3-4 ledger in the B1G, facing off against the Michigan Wolverines on Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor.
Before the first whistle, Spartan wrestling celebrated Caffey, Skyler Crespo, Rayvon Foley, Benny Gomez, Miles Hoey, Cameron Monzadeh, Peyton Omania and Ryan Vasbinder, as well as student manager Maddie Coon in a special senior night recognition. Both Caffey and Foley will finish inside the top 10 all-time in career victories at MSU with 117 and 114 wins, respectively. All nine individuals have left an indelible mark on the Spartan wrestling program, and their commitment has culminated in a combined 45 victories since the start of the 2017-18 season. … rest of story at MSUspartans.com/news/2023/2/10/wrestling-chandler-earns-50th-dual-victory-no-24-spartans-down-no-22-indiana-on-senior-night

6 } – Huskers Collect Fifth Straight Dual Victory

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska wrestling team (11-3, 7-1) tallied seven bout victories en route to the Huskers’ 27-10 victory over Rutgers in front of 1,545 fans at the Devaney Center.

No. 5 Brock Hardy (141) highlighted the day with a technical fall, and No. 1 Peyton Robb (157) and No. 2 Mikey Labriola (174) claimed a pair of victories to remain undefeated at 22-0.

Competition started at 197 with No. 10 Silas Allred facing Billy Janzer of Rutgers (10-7, 2-6 Big Ten). Allred scored a pair of takedowns en route to the 6-0 decision. At HWT, Cale Davidson battled No. 21 Boone McDermott, but fell by major decision, 12-3.

Up next, No. 5 Liam Cronin tallied a 3-1 decision over Rutgers’ No. 16 Dean Peterson. Cronin used an escape and a late takedown in Period 3 to claim his third-straight conference victory. Boo Dryden then got the call at 133 against No. 15 Joe Heilmann. Dryden scored an opening takedown, but Heilmann responded to get the 6-3 decision.

With the Huskers trailing 7-6, Hardy flipped the momentum with a major decision over Rutgers’ Devon Britton. Hardy scored a takedown in each period and added eight nearfall points to grab the 18-3 win.

At 149, Dayne Morton struck first with a takedown in period one, answered by an Anthony White escape. A pair of stall warnings against White in the second period added to Morton’s lead. In the final period, White tallied an escape, a takedown and the riding time point to defeat Morton in a 5-3 decision.

Top-ranked Robb (157) kept his perfect record intact with an 11-3 major decision over Andrew Clark. In the opening period, Robb recorded a takedown and two nearfall swipes to jump out to the 4-0 lead. A second period reversal increased his advantage to 6-0 entering the final two minutes. A pair of takedowns and the riding time point secured the major for Robb and stretched Nebraska’s lead to 15-10.

Bubba Wilson (165) used a big third period takedown to defeat Al DeSantis in a 6-3 decision. Wilson tabbed an escape and a takedown in the second period, while DeSantis got an escape of his own. Entering the final period, Wilson led 3-2, but a DeSantis escape tied it up. Wilson’s crucial takedown and the riding time point earned him the win. Labriola (174) remained undefeated in a 6-2 decision over Jackson Turley. … rest of story at Huskers.com/news/2023/2/12/wrestling
