D1 Insider: Iowa, Penn State rivalry to come to a head on Friday
Tom Brands took a few moments to ponder a thoughtful question about how the team his Iowa Hawkeyes and every other program has been chasing over the last decade has made everyone else better. His perspective has changed since Penn State has won national championship after national championship – something the Hawkeyes used to do on the regular. Iowa hasn’t won an NCAA wrestling championship since 2010. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions have hoisted eight first-place team trophies this decade. “There’s been some perspective brought to our attention and it’s been over a long period of time,” Brands said. “We know that they are a worthy opponent and we have to keep making sure that we don’t miss anything because they are a worthy opponent. They set the standard. They set it high. Yes, they have made us better. We had no choice.” Now, the top-ranked Hawkeyes have an opportunity to start tilting the next decade in their favor. The Hawkeyes will host the Nittany Lions on Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where Penn State is 2-2 under coach Cael Sanderson since 2009.
