Gettysburg’s Delawder lays down De-law on the mat, ranks #1 among females in nation
GETTYSBURG, Adams County — Since the second grade, not even knowing what wrestling was, Gettysburg junior wrestler Montana Delawder saw a flier that caught her eye and brought it home to her parents. She doesn’t come from a background of wrestlers. At the time, her parents didn’t even know if girls could wrestle. They took Montana to open gyms. That’s where she fell in love with the sport. Now, she’s the top female wrestler in the nation in the 112-pound weight class. Over the summer, Montana won the Junior Women’s Free Style National Championship in Fargo, North Dakota — never thinking a simple piece of paper would someday turn into a National Championship. As a freshman two years ago, she was the first girl to qualify for the District 3 AAA District Championships. “Montana is unique. We’ve said it for several years. She’s kind of the heart of the program because she is that emotional leader that get’s everyone excited and pumped up,” said Chris Haines, Gettysburg wrestling head coach. “She doesn’t do anything different then anybody else. The way she treats people on and off the mat, she inspires them and motivates them.” Montana isn’t bothered by wrestling the guys. “Wrestling the guys makes you way tougher, I think, and makes me a lot better of a wrestler. Holmen girls wrestling hopes to help grow the sport
HOLMEN, Wis. (WKBT)–Coach Lulloff thinks his team can accomplish great things. “We got a team that has a ton of potential, but some inexperience.” That potential isn’t just to be better wrestlers, but to help break barriers. “They’re the pioneers of girls wrestling and that’s awesome,” Lulloff said on his female wrestlers. The 15 girls on Holmen’s roster is one of the biggest in western Wisconsin, but it wasn’t always that big. “3 years ago we only had 2-4 girls,” said volunteer assistant Teague Fenwick. Girls like Gwenny Burrows helped the team explode in size. “After getting through the first couple of months, it was shocking to me how much I wanted to stay,” said Burrows. The practices exhausted Gwenny at first.
“It’s getting their cardio ready for the heat of the season,” explained Fenwick. But sticking through it has yielded great results. “I’ve gotten a lot stronger, better at committing to things, last year I didn’t win any matches but this year after sticking with it I’ve won and pinned people,” said Burrows. “Just seeing their confidence and their technique get better as well has been awesome,” added Fenwick. As girls continue to join teams, Holmen hopes that there will be enough teams to make girls wrestling a state sanctioned sport. “Our (competition schedule) is like whenever there’s enough girls, because sometimes there’s not even girls teams,” explained Gwenny. But for now, coach sees them as a part of the team, and the family. “Message is the same, we’re one team. That’s it.’ Doesn’t matter if it’s guy or girl wrestlers,”said Lulloff. MontanaSports.com: Montana High School Association to add girls wrestling as sanctioned sport
BY RICHIE MELBY, MONTANASPORTS.COM | JAN. 20, 2020
BILLINGS — The Montana High School Association executive board passed proposals for the MSHA to add girls wrestling and boys powerlifting as sanctioned sports during the MHSA’s annual meeting on Monday in Billings. The sports will be offered to member schools beginning with the 2020-21 school year. It was announced in late November that the MHSA executive board would propose the additions of the sports after reviewing a study conducted by a committee suggested adding girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport in Montana. Under the current structure, where female wrestlers compete against their male counterparts, it’s believed less than 20 girls wrestlers have qualified for the state tournament in Montana’s history. Only three — former Laurel wrestler Abi Gontarek, Kalispell’s Tilynne Vasquez and Chinook’s Rebecca Stroh — have placed at state. The recent addition of women’s wrestling at the University of Providence in Great Falls, as well as numerous collegiate women’s programs around the country, has sparked an increase in interest of female wrestling, according to those familiar with the study conducted in Montana. MTN Sports took a deeper look into Montana’s female wrestling history and future in last February’s MontanaSports.com Original ” Something to prove.” While the move to add girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport gained traction, Title IX required the MHSA add a complementary boys sport. …
