NC STATE Wolfpack Adds Home Dual vs. Virginia Tech

It’s Going Down: @PackWrestle Adds Home Dual vs. Virginia Tech

Non-conference dual will be Sunday, Feb. 20 in Reynolds Coliseum

RALEIGH, N.C. – After a cancellation to the scheduled top-10 ACC Wrestling showdown between NC State and Virginia Tech last weekend, the two schools have now agreed to meet in a dual in the final weekend of the regular season.

The non-conference dual will take place inside Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. The match-up will also be televised on the ACC Network.

“Both (schools) agreed that this is something both programs need, our fan bases both want this and it’s great for the whole conference, in general,” said NC State head coach Pat Popolizio. “A lot of positives came out of a negative situation, and we’re both on the same page this dual meet has to happen every year.

“When you look at the success of the conference, it’s due to the competition within, and with Virginia Tech being one of the top teams in the country it only makes us better to see high-level competition.”

The two teams were originally scheduled to meet in the ACC opener for both schools back on Jan. 21. Due to a decision within the Virginia Tech program, the contest was ruled a forfeit in favor of the Pack, which will result in an ACC win.

Michael Stokes Awards presented to Fike wrestlers

Aaron Bancroft and Jayleen Bullock were recently presented their Michael Stokes Awards for being the best senior wrestlers in the Tar-Neuse River counties. Both were undefeated state champion wrestlers in their senior year, Bancroft in 2020 and Bullock in 2021.

Jayleen Bullock with the 2021 Award (on left) and Aaron Bancroft with 2020

Undefeated State Champion Aaron Bancroft of Fike High School won his 2nd state title in 2020 in the 3-A 170 lbs. Division with 51 wins.  Last year he was named the Lee Carroll Award winner as top underclassmen in the area.  Aaron also has earned his 4th TDR Top 12 engraved wooden plaque this year as being a top wrestler in his weight class in eastern North Carolina.  Jayleen Bullock completed his senior season in late June with a state title, undefeated record and a TDR Top 12 plaque to finish off his career at Fike.

In 2019 Bancroft earned his first State Champion medal, at 160 pounds, with a (52-1) record.  His only loss was to a Virginia State Champion in finals of the WRAL Holiday tournament.  He was the first state champion in wrestling for Fike.  As a sophomore, Bancroft won his first district title yet fell short of placing at the state tournament while finishing with a (49-5) record.  As a freshman Aaron had a (45-6) record, placed 2nd in districts and placed 5th in the state tournament. His overall scholastic career record is 197 wins and 12 losses in his four years of competition.

Michael Stokes wrestled the 1981-1984 seasons at Tarboro High School and with a (96–4) career record.  He was North Carolina’s 2nd 3-time State Champion when there was only one individual champion at a weight in the state. He wrestled for N.C. State and won ACC wrestling titles in 1988 and 1989 and was named the ACC Most Valuable Wrestler both years.  His record of 68 wins 8 losses and 3 ties (.879) is the best career winning percentage at NC State.  He finished second at the NCAA Nationals at 126 lbs. in 1989 to Kendall Cross, the eventual Olympic Gold medalist. Stokes co-captained the Wolfpack in 1989 and one of the ACC’s all time 50 greatest wrestlers as recognized during the conference’s 50th anniversary celebration.  Stokes credits wrestling as “providing me with a mental toughness that enables me to remove boundaries that stand in my way.  Wrestling has given me the sheer determination to believe that I can conquer anything that I set my mind to do.”

Previous Stokes Award wrestlers include Ray Darden of Ayden-Grifton and Jordan Todd of Rosewood tied for the award in (2019), Michael King of North Pitt (2018), Quadarrius Hopkins of Tarboro (2017), Wilson Smith of Rocky Mount (2016), Angel Najar of North Pitt (2015), Reggie Huff of Southern Nash (2014), David Guevara of Tarboro (2013), Alexander Knight and Jaciento Williamson of Rocky Mount (2012), Xavier Najar of North Pitt (2011), Joe Young of Northern Nash (2010), Corey Smith of Tarboro (2009), Jasmine Cooper of Nash Central (2008), Eric Wischhusen, (2007), Roylando Lucas (2001) and Ira Bing (2000) of Southern Nash, John Brewer (2006) of Wilson Fike, Anthony Taylor (2005) of Rocky Mount, Sammi Hadi (2004) and Ryan Huffman (1997) of SouthWest Edgecombe, Charles Washington (2003) of Northern Nash, Quadric Eason (2002), Mike Christopher (1999 & 1998), Tony Mercer (1996) and Lee Carroll (1994 & 1995) of Tarboro.

Ohio’s OHSAA to Add Girls Wrestling

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a historic move Thursday, the Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors voted unanimously to add girls wrestling and boys volleyball as emerging sports beginning with the 2022-23 school year. In addition, the board voted to move girls and boys lacrosse out of the emerging sports category into the list of OHSAA recognized sports, and also committed to discuss partnering with a group to provide a tournament in Esports (gaming).

The Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association has been conducting a girls wrestling tournament since 2020, and the Ohio High School Boys Volleyball Association has been conducting its tournament since 1988.

“The OHSAA has been talking with the boys volleyball and girls wrestling leaders for several years and we are now in the position to bring these two sports into the OHSAA,” said OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute. “This move will help those sports continue to grow and allow those student-athletes to compete for an OHSAA state championship. It gives more kids opportunities and that is the mission of the OHSAA.”

As emerging sports, girls wrestling and boys volleyball will be administered like the OHSAA’s current 26 recognized sports, but will have additional requirements according to OHSAA General Sports Regulation 16 that could lead to full sanctioning in the future.

“We will look to keep a very similar format for the girls wrestling and boys volleyball tournaments as what the coaches associations have been doing,” Ute said. “The girls wrestling state tournament is held in mid-February and the boys volleyball state tournament is held in the spring. We have not yet developed tournament regulations, but we’ll start working on that so that those two sports hit the ground running next fall for the start of the 2022-23 school year.” … rest of the story at https://portal.nwcaonline.com/articles/NWCA_News/OHSAA-to-Add-Girls-Wrestling-13-1-2022

8 } – For Chertow Camps, it’s all about teaching the kids
By Mike Finn & Pat McDonald
For three decades Ken Chertow has had one mission: Train kids for life through the sport of wrestling. The former Olympian and three-time All-American at Penn State has been running clinics and camps since his time in Happy Valley. Since his early days, Chertow has created one of the most well-respected camps in the country … and he’s still going strong. “I started doing camps when I was in college. I was running day camps when I was in my late teens going to Penn State,” said Chertow, who coached in the Big Ten following his collegiate career.  “When I finished at Penn State, I immediately started my overnight camp and during those six years of college coaching at Ohio State (and) Penn State, I was building my camps up, so by the mid-90s my camp was over 1,000 children coming and basically I was working full time for college coaching and just part time doing camps.”
Chertow decided to walk away from college coaching and focus on helping younger wrestlers. … rest of story at https://www.win-magazine.com/2021/06/02/for-chertow-camps-its-all-about-teaching-the-kids/?mc_cid=2fffafa367&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b#utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=for-chertow-camps-its-all-about-teaching-the-kids

11 } – Klessinger: Here’s how you can put negative thoughts aside and focus on winning
By John Klessinger
I have had a glimpse of carefree wrestling when competing. The time in a match when you are not concerned about winning or losing. As weird as it seems, time kind of slows down. You are hyper-alert, you react without thinking, and overly calm. I remember a few matches when it happened.

I remember back to my junior year in high school in the consolation finals
of the Lititz Lions Holiday Tournament.
I was the top seed and lost in the semi- finals. I came back through the wrestle backs possessed. I wrestled better in the wrestlebacks even though I was angry and disappointed. I didn’t care if I won or lost. I just wrestled. Nothing I did was conscious. Everything seemed automatic. In the third-place match, I pinned a good kid in the second period with seemingly little effort.

In my sophomore year in the sectional tournament, I was also the top seed and lost in the semis. In the third- and fourth- place match, I scored a major decision. The following week in the District III tournament, that same wrestler I majored went on to place fourth in the district. I lost my first match and was eliminated from the competition.
Or at the state tournament my senior year, I lost again in the semis. … rest of story at https://www.win-magazine.com/2021/09/15/20755/?mc_cid=453734be32&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b#utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=20755

National Wrestling Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2022

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame announced on Wednesday that the Class of 2022 is Distinguished Members Clarissa Chun, Sara McMann, Andy Rein and Jake Varner, Meritorious Official Tom Clark (posthumously), Order of Merit Recipient Mike Moyer, and Medal of Courage recipient Melissa Simmons.

“Following an extensive screening and selection process, I am excited to announce such a notable and deserving group of honorees for 2022,” said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. “We are fortunate to be able to spotlight these inductees who have transcended our sport’s heritage over the past 40 years. It is also a class that represents the positive transformational impact females are realizing in wrestling, with two female Distinguished Members and our first female Medal of Courage recipient.”

The Hall of Fame Board of Governors approved the selections at their meeting in Waterloo, Iowa on October 25.

The Hall of Fame will announce its Outstanding American honoree at a later date.

The induction ceremony will be held at the 45th Honors Weekend on June 3-4, 2022 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. For more information on Honors Weekend, please telephone (405) 377-5243.

Chun, McMann and Varner were chosen as Distinguished Members for the Modern Era while Rein was selected by the Veterans Committee. The newest honorees will bring the number of Distinguished Members to 204, since the Hall of Fame began in 1976.

It is the first time that more than one female Distinguished Member has been selected and Chun and McMann become the third and fourth female Distinguished Members, joining Tricia Saunders (2006) and Kristie Davis (2018).

Simmons is the first female selected to receive the Medal of Courage while three females being honored equals the largest number of females in a single year. The Class of 1998 included Sandy Stevens receiving the Order of Merit and Sue Siar and Sally Stanford being honored as Meritorious Officials.

Rein becomes the 10th and final member of the 1984 United States Olympic freestyle team to be honored as a Distinguished Member, making it the only Olympic team to have every team member recognized. Other team members were Ed Banach (1993), Lou Banach (1994), Bruce Baumgartner (2002), Barry Davis (2007), Joe Gonzales (2015), Randy Lewis (1998), Dave Schultz (1997), Mark Schultz (1995), and Bobby Weaver (2008). It is the only Olympic team where every member has been recognized as a Distinguished Member. Every member of the coaching staff from 1984 is also a Distinguished Member with head coach Dan Gable (1980) and assistant coaches Bobby Douglas (1987), Stan Dziedzic (1996), J Robinson (2005) and Bill Weick (2007). … rest of story at https://nwhof.org/news/national-wrestling-hall-of-fame-announces-class-of-2022?mc_cid=f82814b7a7&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
