TDR Awards
For over twenty years the TakeDown Report has sponsored four awards to recognize outstanding scholastic wrestlers in eastern North Carolina. The James Johnson Memorial Award is presented to the top senior wrestler each year while the Roy Heverly Award is presented to the top underclassman wrestler. The Michael Stokes Award and the Lee Carroll Award are for outstanding wrestlers in a more limited area of counties in the Tar River area.
This year the field will grow to include a 5th Trophy Award for the Most Inspirational Female scholastic wrestler in eastern North Carolina. Girls’ wrestling is growing at a rapid rate with over 30 states having sanctioned state championships in girls wrestling. While it is not a sanctioned sport in North Carolina the number of girls wrestling in the scholastic ranks is growing at a rapid rate. This Award will be named in honor of the Olivia Neal, the first female to qualify for and win a match at the NCHSAA State Wrestling Championship. She wrestled for the Rosewood High School Eagles.
The wrestlers to be awarded these trophies shall be named before the end of March along with a full listing of wrestlers in the TDR Top 12 for 2022.

By Mike Finn
The start of the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships are just hours away and here are a few stories to get you ready for three days of competition.
Living Legacies
Myles Amine and David Carr are more than just NCAA Division I wrestlers trying to win individual championship for Michigan and Iowa State, respectively, this week in Detroit. They are also living legacies at their schools.
Amine, a graduate student who has already earned four All-American honors for the Wolverines, is the son of Mike Amine, a four-year letter-winner and 1989 NCAA finalist for Michigan. Mike is also the father of Malik Amine, who also wrestled for the Maize and Blue between 2014 and 2019. Myles’ cousins — Cameron, a current 165-pound starter for Michigan and Jordan (2015-18) — also have Wolverine roots and are the sons of Sam Amine, who wrestled for Michigan, 1988-90. … rest of the story at https://www.win-magazine.com/2022/03/16/a-day-before-march-matness-pre-tourney-notes-on-the-2022-ncaas/

HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL RECRUITING SHOWCASE – NORTH CAROLINA QUALIFIER
HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL RECRUITING SHOWCASE – NORTH CAROLINA QUALIFIER SET FOR BERMUDA RUN, FEB. 25-26 By Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
USA Wrestling has announced the fourth of its five High School National Recruiting Showcase Qualifiers for 2022.
The USA Wrestling High School National Recruiting Showcase – North Carolina Qualifier will be held at RISE Indoor Sports Complex in Bermuda Run, N.C., February 25-26.
This event, and the entire High School National Recruiting Showcase series, is open only to boys and girls athletes who qualify for the USA Wrestling Junior age division. Wrestlers must have been born September 1, 2002 or after, plus must be enrolled in grades 9-12. Athletes from any state may enter any of the five qualifiers.
The qualifier events will feature top High School boys’ and girls’ wrestlers from around the country. The top six place winners in each weight class in the six qualifiers will earn a spot in the High School National Recruiting Showcase. These events are contested in the style in which athletes will compete in college, boys (folkstyle) and girls (freestyle).
The 2022 High School National Recruiting Showcase for boys will be held at the UNI-Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa, April 1-3. This will be held alongside the annual USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships, serving as the elite division for high school boys. For those who don’t qualify for the High School National Recruiting Showcase, there will be a High School Open division of the Folkstyle Nationals.
The 2022 High School National Recruiting Showcase for girls will be held at South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas, Nev., April 28-29. It will be one of the nine different events held during the week of the Open Wrestling Championships, which includes multiple age-groups and styles. The High School National Recruiting Showcase for girls will be held alongside the U.S. Senior Nationals for women, with their championship finals side-by-side on the raised platform at the South Point.
REGISTER FOR RECRUITING SHOWCASE NORTH CAROLINA QUALIFIER
Pre-registration entry fee is $50 per athlete, and closes on Monday, February 21 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Late registration online registration costs $65 per athlete, and closes Friday, February 25 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
Please note that state champions and National Prep champions (any year) who meet the age and grade requirements automatically qualify for the High School National Recruiting Showcase for both boys and girls (They do not need to attend a qualifier). State champions are defined as state association sanctioned state champions for boys, and both state association sanctioned champions and recognized unofficial state champions for girls.
NEW FOR 2022 – Any wrestler who has been a placewinner at the NHSCA High School Nationals (traditionally held in Virginia Beach) any year are eligible to compete at the High School National Recruiting Showcase.
USA Wrestling will be releasing the dates and sites for the one remaining High School National Recruiting Showcase Qualifiers as soon as it is confirmed. Please visit USA Wrestling’s website TheMat.com and its social media platforms for more information.
