Wrestling shaped Mike Zimmer; it also shaped the Vikings’ draft

TDR Editor’s Notes ; What an interesting perspective by a football coach that having lineman to wrestle in the off season as it makes them better football players! It seems he would know in his profession.
***********************************************************
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings headed into the NFL draft needing to bolster the middle of their offensive and defensive lines. It’s probably no coincidence that two of the players they targeted were standouts in the sport that coach Mike Zimmer has called the toughest thing he’s ever done.
Ohio State center Pat Elflein and Iowa defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson — whom the Vikings picked in the third and fourth round, respectively — were standout wrestlers in high school before they became Big Ten opponents. Elflein was a state and national tournament qualifier his senior year as a heavyweight at Pickerington North High School just outside Columbus, Ohio, while Johnson went 21-3 as a junior at St. Joseph’s High School outside Chicago.

Many diagnosed with autism have found wrestling is right sport

TDR Editor’s Notes ; It has been our experience that when given a chance wrestling can be of a great benefit for many different types of athletes and types of learners. This article not only covers autistic wrestlers but also explains autism to broaden understanding of this diagnosis.
**************************************************
Wrestling is for everybody. That’s one of the most appealing aspects of amateur wrestling. It’s a sport that is open to all types of individuals. Males and females. Individuals of every height, weight and body-build. Athletes dealing with hearing or vision loss, missing limbs or other physical aspects that might be considered “limitations” (or even “deal-breakers”) in other sports. Add autism to that list. Many individuals diagnosed with autism have found that wrestling is the right sport for them.
This article will explain what autism is … and how some individuals who had tried other sports or activities have found the right fit in amateur wrestling.

Style and substance: Kasper earns Duke’s highest honor

TDR Editor’s Notes ; A wrestler earns the top athletic award at a school that is known a bit more for another winter sport.
**********************************************************
EXINGTON – He’s become known at Duke University for his loud sports jackets and even louder rise up the ranks from unheralded 184-pound wrestler to All-America heavyweight and beyond. The beyond: Lexington grad Jacob Kasper has been named Duke Athletics MVP. No, it was not one of Coach K’s basketball players. “It’s definitely something you want to accomplish, but I never thought it would come to fruition,” said Kasper, whose sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships made him the third All-American in program history and one of 13 in Duke annals to win 30 matches. The fight of their lives As Fike senior Settles aims for a state championship, his coach battles cancer

TDR Editor’s Notes ; We did not realize that Coach Wickham was battling serious health concerns. We wish him the best and congratulate him for his success in working with the wrestlers at Wilson Fike.
**********************************************
By Paul Durham, Sports Editor
The afternoon sun peeking through the bay windows of the original auto shop that is now simply the wrestling room at Fike High cast a glare over the mats Tuesday afternoon, almost illuminating the sweat stains from seasons of hard work. On the mat, senior Rae’Sae Settles began his workout as Golden Demons head coach Mike Wickham called out directions. Both of them — one 18 and the other 62 — are facing battles of an entirely different nature. For Settles, the most important two weeks of his life as a wrestler loom. He will enter the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A East Regional tournament this weekend as the top seed at 132 pounds. A top-four finish there will ensure his fourth straight trip to the state championship tournament the following weekend in Greensboro.
