Princeton defeats Hofstra 22-19

Hempstead, NY – Hofstra recorded three bonus point victories, including a tech fall by freshman Jamel Hudson, but Princeton tallied four bonus point wins, including a pin by Abe Ayala, as the Tigers posted a 22-19 EIWA victory over the Pride at the Mack Sports Complex Friday night.  Princeton improved to 4-1 overall and 4-1 in the EIWA while Hofstra slipped to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in conference action.  In addition to Hudson’s tech fall at 133, Hofstra received major decision wins by graduate-student Joe Booth at 165, and senior Jamie Franco at 125.  In addition to Ayala’s win by fall, Princeton received a tech fall victory from freshman Jordan Laster at 141 and major decision wins by sophomore Kevin Moylan at 157 and freshman Brett Harner at 184.  In a contest that saw each team win five matches, the decision hung in the balance to the final battle of the evening between Hofstra junior Cody Ruggirello and Princeton sophomore Nick Maselli at 149 pounds. The Pride trailed 22-16 heading into that contest after battling back from a 17-4 deficit after the first five matches. In the 149-pound clash, Ruggirello dominated the match, recording 6:32 worth of riding time, but couldn’t turn Maselli for the contest-tying fall and settled for a 6-0 victory. Ruggirello improved to 16-7 on the year.  In a contest that was expected to be close with Hofstra’s 13th-ranked senior Luke Vaith sidelined with an arm injury, the match lived up to its billing. After Moylan majored Hofstra’s Nick Terdick (7-9), 19-5 at 157 and Hofstra’s Booth (23-5) majored Joshua Ellis, 14-4 at 165, the Tigers won the next three matches to take a commanding 17-4 lead into the intermission. Tiger senior Ryan Callahan topped Hofstra’s Frank Affronti, 9-4 at 174, Harner majored pride freshman Dwight Howes (6-9), 16-7 at 184, and Ayala pinned Zeal McGrew (6-10) to put Princeton up at the break.  But the Pride came back in the second half of the match, winning four of the five bouts beginning with a 5-4 decision by freshman Michael Hughes (10-12) at 285. Franco (16-6) majored junior Jake Intrator at 125, 12-0, and Hudson (13-4) posted a tech fall in 5:44 over junior Ryan Cash at 133 to close the deficit to 17-16.  But Princeton freshman Jordan Laster tallied a 17-2 tech fall victory over Vaith’s replacement, redshirt freshman Alex Mirante (1-5) to boost the Tiger lead to six points before the final match.  Hofstra will return to action on Sunday, January 19 when they travel to Bloomsburg University for a 1 p.m. match.

Minnesota tops Northwestern, 26-12, but McMullan beats hwt. champ Nelson

by Mark Palmer, College Wrestling Examiner
Second-ranked University of Minnesota defeated Big Ten rival No. 16 Northwestern, 26-12, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. Friday night… but the biggest news was in a battle of the big men, as Wildcat heavyweight Mike McMullan upset defending champ Tony Nelson.  The two are familiar foes, having wrestled each other three times in 2012-13, including for the Big Ten and NCAA heavyweight titles last season, with Nelson coming out on top in all three matches. The two also faced off against each other at the 2013 NWCA All-Star Classic in November; although an exhibition that does not officially count towards a wrestler’s record, Nelson edged McMullan, 2-1 TB.  Nelson, top-ranked in the 285-pound weight class, put the first points on the board with an escape in the first period. No. 8 ranked McMullan tied the score with an escape in the second period. After no scoring in the third period, the match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. In the first overtime, McMullan scored a quick takedown on the two-time NCAA heavyweight champ, getting a 3-1 sudden victory win… and handing Nelson his first loss of the season.  Despite Nelson’s loss, the Gophers were still able to win six of ten matches, with bonus points being a factor in four of those victories. Minnesota got major decision wins from David Thorn at 133 pounds, and from Kevin Steinhaus at 184… while two from the visiting squad pinned their Wildcat opponents: 157-pounder Brandon Kingsley, and, at 197, Scott Schiller.  In addition to Mike McMullan’s upset win at heavyweight, Northwestern scored victories from 125-pounder Garrison White, and Lee Munster at 174.  With the win, Minnesota rises to 5-0 for the season, while Northwestern is now 3-2.

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford wrestling team fell just short of defeating visiting Oregon State, falling 21-14 Saturday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal drops to 9-4 overall and to 2-1 in the Pac-12. Oregon State moves to 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in the Pac-12.  Oregon State won six of the 10 bouts, including the final three, to defeat the Cardinal.  Stanford fell behind 3-0 after redshirt freshman Josh Marchok dropped an 11-4 decision to No. 17 Amarveer Dhesi at heavyweight. He drops to 11-9 on the year and 8-5 in dual competition.  Sophomore Evan Silver responded with a 12-3 major decision over Joey Palmer at 125 pounds to give Stanford the 4-3 edge. He improves to 16-4 on the year and 6-2 in duals.  Redshirt senior no. 12 Ryan Mango added to the Cardinal lead with a 6-3 decision over Drew Van Anrooy at 133 pounds. It marked the 99th career win for Mango, moving him into sole possession of eighth place on Stanford’s career wins list. He is now 18-3 on the year. Sophomore 141-pounder Peter Russo secured a big win for Stanford, holding off Joey Delgado late in the third period for the 6-5 victory. Russo trailed 5-4 going into the third period where he chose to start in the down position. He registered an escape to tie the bout at 5-5 and earned the win with 2:38 of riding time.  Oregon State won the next two bouts to cut the Stanford lead to 10-9. Redshirt freshman Jim Wilson, ranked No. 20 nationally, halted the Beavers’ momentum by posting 10-2 major decision over Toney Chay at 165 pounds. The Lodi, Calif., native only led 2-0 heading into the final period, but had racked up plenty of riding time. He notched three takedowns and an escape in the third to score the bonus points for the Cardinal.  The Cardinal still led 14-12 with two bouts left, but a fall by Oregon State’s Austin Morehead over Zach Nevills at 184 pounds put the Beavers ahead for good.  Stanford hits the road next week, travelling to Duke and North Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Stanford true freshman Tommy Pawelski, who was wrestling up two weight classes, fell 9-0 to Mike Pongracz.   In one of the most competitive bouts of the night, Wilson dropped a 4-2 decision to seventh-ranked Corey Mock at 165 pounds. Trailing 3-1 in the third period, Wilson was awarded a point for a stalling call on Mock, who had secured 1:00 of riding time. Wilson went in on a shot late in the period, but was unable to finish it out before time expired.   Senior Dan Scherer stopped the bleeding for the Cardinal at 197 pounds. Pack’s heavyweight falls 1-0 in final to two-time NCAA Champion
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – NC State redshirt sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski brought home a second place finish at 285 pounds at the 2014 Southern Scuffle, one of the top collegiate tournaments annually. In all, four of the five Pack wrestlers that advanced to second day action won at least one bout on Thursday.  Gwiazdowski came in as the No. 2 seed and ranked fifth nationally. In the third period, Gwiazdowski chose neutral, but could not score a takedown to make up the point difference.  Gwiazdowski breezed through two wins yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals last night. In earlier action today, Gwiazdowski beat Jonathan Gingrich of Penn State and then scored a 7-3 decision over No. 12 Jeremy Johnson of Ohio to reach the finals.  Junior Tommy Gantt just missed placing in the top-8, finishing one spot out. Competing in the wrestlebacks at 157 pounds, Gantt posted a 9-2 win over Robert Burg of Navy and followed with a 7-5 decision over Brandon Kingsley of Minnesota. Gantt was eliminated with a 9-2 loss by Luke Smith of Central Michigan.  A pair of Pack freshmen each notched a win today in the wrestlebacks before being eliminated.
