Waynesburg shows grit in PAC win at W&J
Jackets overcome forfeit at 125 pounds in 22-21 triumph
WASHINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 23) – Over the past few seasons, the Waynesburg vs. Washington & Jefferson match has been intense, closely contested and a highlight of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) calendar. Thursday night’s meeting of the two schools didn’t do anything to change that trend.
Knowing they were going to have to forfeit at 125 pounds, the Yellow Jackets knew they would be battling from behind against a Presidents squad that was picked to win the conference title prior to the start of the season. Head coach Ron Headlee and his staff made several moves in the upper weights to try and keep the match in reach by the time 285 pounds rolled around. The moves worked perfectly thanks to the outstanding efforts put forth by all nine grapplers that hit the mat. Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Coalition launches #ThankYouMonth on National Girls and Women in Sports Day
By Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Coalition
The Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Coalition (WCWC) is launching #ThankYouMonth today, Wednesday, February 5, 2020, on National Girls and Women in Sports Day (#NGWSD). This coalition of wrestling leaders, with input from the vast U.S. wrestling community, will be making phone calls, sending letters and creating social media posts, thanking all who have helped fuel the explosive growth of wrestling for girls and women. This effort is designed to show appreciation for those who have made decisions to help female wrestling to grow, and show appreciation for the expanded opportunity for girls and women to wrestle. It has been a great time for women’s and girls wrestling. There are now 21 state high school associations which have approved official girls wrestling programs. The NAIA will be hosting its second NAIA National Invitational for women’s college wrestling this year. The NCAA, at the Division II and Division III levels, have approved official Emerging Sport Status for women’s college wrestling. Once a trailblazer for girls’ wrestling in Iowa, Cassy Herkelman now coaches the Denver girls’ team
DENVER, Ia. — During the first month of the 2019-20 high school season, coach Cassy Jakoubek met with the Denver girls’ wrestling team for the first time. She introduced herself, listed some goals and shared her excitement for the year ahead. Then she opened the floor for the wrestlers to speak. A few of them had the same question: They had heard good things about their new coach, but Google searches provided no help. Jakoubek laughed and suggested they use her maiden name.
“Cassy Herkelman.”
Out came the phones.
First girl to win a match at the Iowa state tournament.
Cadet national champ and two-time Junior national finalist.
Two-time All-American at McKendree.
“You could see the lights go on,” Jakoubek said with a laugh. “They were like, ‘Oh, OK,’” Rest of story and video at https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/high-school/2020/01/23/cassy-herkelman-iowa-girls-wrestling-denver-coach-iwcoa-girls-state/4552202002/?mc_cid=5c1c1413e2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Girls wrestling grows nationally, but Virginia still has yet to form a female-only high school league
A pilot program for girls-only tournaments could change that with large turnouts. Meanwhile, determined wrestlers, who happen to be female, are still waiting.Author: Mike WisePublished: 11:08 PM EST January 23, 2020Updated: 11:08 PM EST January 23, 2020
LEESBURG, Va. — Another day of practice for Julianna Erice and Danielle Webb at Riverside High School, another day of learning all the right techniques to make them better wrestlers, so they can prepare for their next match, so they can grapple against more…boys. “Virginia’s pretty behind the times,” Erice laments. “Hawaii was the first state that sanctioned women’s wrestling in high school. And I guess Virginia just hasn’t gotten around to it for some odd reason.” The Rams’ girls wrestlers, made up of two sophomores and a junior, not only train with Riverside’s boy’s team during practice sessions but because there is no sanctioned girls-only division in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) they are forced to wrestle other male athletes during high school meets. And that brings on a sobering reality for Erice and the more than 200 female wrestlers currently competing in the VHSL. “It makes me feel kind of disappointed because if I want to wrestle like a lot of matches, I would have to wrestle against boys and boys are biologically stronger than me,” Erice said. “So, it’s an unfair advantage.” “Even if you’re in the same weight class they’re still a little bit heavier and they can muscle through a lot more. I mean, not saying that girls are weak or anything … it’s just like again like the whole difference with the boys and girls, it just it’s a lot better to be able to wrestle like the same gender,” Webb said. Women’s wrestling receives NCAA Emerging Sport Status after approval from Div. II and Div. III
BY GARY ABBOTT, USA WRESTLING | JAN. 25, 2020,
Two different NCAA Divisions, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III, voted to approve women’s wrestling as an Emerging Sport during the NCAA Convention in Anaheim, Calif. today. The vote was the latest major step forward for women’s college wrestling, which is growing rapidly and gaining momentum all across the United States. Wrestle Like A Girl, on site at the NCAA Convention, reported this great news on its Twitter feed. “This is another exciting and monumental step forward for women’s wrestling in America. This will indeed change the lives of many young people across the nation, and also impact the lives of generations of female wrestlers to come. We thank the tireless efforts of the vast coalition of organizations and leaders that have worked together to reach this great achievement. We look forward to continued growth and expanded opportunity for women in college wrestling,” said Rich Bender, Executive Director of USA Wrestling. “Along with high school state sanctioning, nothing is more important than opening up more opportunity at the college levels. As a sport, we have been fighting for many years to create opportunity for girls and women to wrestle at all levels. For Team USA, this will help the United States be a perennial World power in the sport. With opportunity comes growth and with growth comes numbers. We are seeing now what opportunity can do to fuel growth. This decision gives complete legitimacy for the sport, and shows that women’s wrestling is a fully functioning sport in our nation,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner. NCAA Division I did not address the issue of Emerging Sport Status for women’s wrestling this week, and will vote on that proposal in a meeting later in the year. Women’s wrestling voted NCAA Emerging Sport
BRISTOL, Tenn. – On Saturday at the NCAA Convention in Anaheim, Calif., women’s wrestling was officially voted an NCAA Emerging Sport. King was one of the first schools to add women’s wrestling, first competing in 2010. “Girls wrestling at the high school level is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country,” said director of athletics David Hicks. “King has been a pioneer in providing new and exciting opportunities for female student-athletes, and we are proud to have been a pioneer as a leader in achieving NCAA Emerging Sport status for women’s wrestling.” King competed in women’s wrestling for the first time in 2010 and was one of the first 20 schools, and one of the first NCAA schools, to sponsor the sport. The Tornado had its first Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) individual national champion in 2011 and had at least one individual national champion every year through 2018. King had a program-record four national champions in 2015 and 14 WCWA All-Americans in 2013 and 2014. Head coach Jason Moorman has led the Tornado every year, leading King to four straight WCWA national championships from 2014-17, earning WCWA Coach of the Year honors three times, 2014-16. Those four years, King also won the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals titles. Bears freshman Baysden pushes wrestling team to third round
When the wrestling season started for the New Bern Bears, freshman 106-pounder Michael Baysden wasn’t a starter. Tuesday night, he was just a star. In a second round match against Lumberton with the Bears and Pirates tied at 33-all, advancing came down to the last match – Baysden versus Lumberton’s Brock Chavis. After getting taken down and being behind 2-0, Baysden battled back to take control and eventually get a second period pin to send his team to the third round. “I was just feeling like ‘all right, let’s go,’” Baysden said. “I didn’t want to let my team down so I tried to just stay calm and cool and that’s what I did.” Bears’ head coach Bo Lansche was less cool and calm than his freshman but was as excited after the end result. “I was confident in him but I hated for it to come down to him having that kind of pressure on him,” Lansche said. “He’s a tough, gritty kid though man and he stepped up big time tonight.” Story at https://www.newbernsj.com/sports/20200204/bears-freshman-baysden-pushes-wrestling-team-to-third-round

HS Roundup: Laney wrestling falls in East Regional Final
Cardinal Gibbons 30, Laney 19 (NCHSAA 4A East Regional Final)
The Buccaneers just couldn’t find enough bonus points Friday at home and fell to the Crusaders in a rematch of last year’s 4A Eastern Regional Final. Laney took a 6-0 lead after wins from Mark Samuel (106) and Jayden Harrison in the first two bouts, but Cardinal Gibbons won four-straight from 120-through-138 to take a 16-6 lead. The next two bouts were victories for the Buccaneers, but the Crusaders did a good job avoiding pins against Marcus Mondragon (145) and Seth Thomas (152) to maintain a lead at 16-13. Laney lost at 160, but got a win from Devon Bell (170). Thanks to an unsportsmanlike penalty, Cardinal Gibbons’ lead was just 18-16 with five bouts left. Any momentum from Laney was quickly squashed after losing by pin at 182 and then falling at both 195 and 220. Emmanuel Bell (285) closed the match with a victory, but the Crusaders had already clinched the overall win.
Laney 40, New Bern 34 (NCHSAA 4A East Third Round)
Emmanuel Bell, Mark Samuel, Evan Kite, Noah Thomas and Conner Johnson all won with pins as the Buccaneers eased past the Bears in the first match Friday. Marcus Mondragon, Seth Thomas and Trystan Richardson also earned victories for Laney. The Bucs were up 40-10 and forfeited the final four bouts as they had already clinched the match. White’s Pin Puts Huskers Past Ohio State
LINCOLN — The No. 6 Nebraska wrestling team used a last-second, match-clinching pin from a hobbled No. 4 Isaiah White (165) to defeat No. 3 Ohio State 19-14 in front of 1,675 fans at the Devaney Center on Sunday afternoon. The Huskers (7-3, 2-3 Big Ten) won six of ten bouts overall to record their first victory over a top three-rated opponent since 2008. No. 6 Mikey Labriola (174) set the tone for what would be a thrilling meet with a match-opening 3-1 victory. The returning All-American sophomore from Easton, Pa., battled No. 7 Kaleb Romero to a 1-1 tie as time was winding down in Period 3. Labriola was then able to get in on a shot and record a takedown before the buzzer sounded as Romero attempted to crawl away. Ohio State challenged the takedown, but officials confirmed the call on the mat following video review. Nebraska was, however, deducted one team point at the conclusion of the match for unsportsmanlike conduct. Buckeye redshirt freshman Rocky Jordan was able to record an upset victory over No. 8 Taylor Venz (184) in the second match of the afternoon. Venz started Period 2 on bottom and recorded a reversal to go up 2-0, but Jordan scored a third-period takedown and added a point for riding time to earn a 3-2 decision and put the Buckeyes in front 3-2. The ‘Big Brothers’ on Little Rock’s Team
LITTLE ROCK – Leaders pave the way for those behind them. In Little Rock wrestling’s inaugural season, this title bears even more weight as individuals can create a team culture and vision from scratch. In the case of Paul Bianchi, Jose Champagne and Dylan Johnson, they use a more familial term to explain the role. “We kind of look at it as being the big brothers on the team,” says Johnson, a six-foot, 197-pound junior with a kind, southern drawl. As the only three upperclassmen that start in dual matches for the Trojans, the trio is aware of their unique position. Having transferred to Little Rock from other programs, each are part of the minority on the team that has prior experience competing on the collegiate level. “It’s cool but also kind of nerve-wracking because we have to set the tone for the program,” says fellow junior Bianchi, whose more calm demeanor sharply contrasts his unreserved aggression on the mat at the 133-pound position. Granville wrestlers missing deployed coach
RANVILLE — There’s a different feel to Granville wrestling practices these days. The wrestlers still go through their conditioning workouts and drills, they still engage in one-on-one full-speed bouts — but there’s a missing voice and presence in the room. Longtime wrestling coach and physical education teacher Steve Palmer is deploying to Kuwait with his New York National Guard unit, leaving his family, school and the team he has coached through the first half of the season. “I’m thankful that he’s doing it for us, but I would like him to be here for my senior year,” said senior 160-pounder Ben Chilkott, who is out with an elbow injury suffered last week. “But he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do.” “I personally am proud of him for it,” said senior Cole Haines, who wrestles at 170 for the Golden Horde. “He’s serving his country, he’s protecting all of us here.” Palmer, a Sergeant Major and a medic in the Army National Guard, was given a sendoff ceremony by the school before Christmas break. High school wrestling rankings: Notre Dame-GP’s Brandan Chletsos earning his place in national spotlight
It is going to take a crane to remove Notre Dame-GP’s three returning state champions from the top spots at their respective weights in the weekly Morning Call rankings. That sentence is going to need amending: There are four Crusaders who are not budging at this point in the season. Sophomore Brandan Chletsos solidified his position as the area’s clear-cut top 120-pounder with his performance at the 15th annual Escape the Rock tournament. He left Council Rock South High School with a championship belt and a boatload of confidence. “Once I won Trojan Wars [in late December in Chambersburg],” Chletsos said, “I knew I was on a roll. Training with my partners and coaches in the room, their motivation constantly pushed me to improve and really helped me a lot. “Winning this tournament really showed me what I was capable of. I’m hoping for a big season this year.” … Rest of the story at https://www.mcall.com/sports/varsity/wrestling/mc-spt-week3-high-school-wrestling-rankings-20200121-3f3tg7x46rhuvgc76et5lzwghy-story.html?mc_cid=d9bb51b324&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
