Providence women’s wrestling coach Carlene Sluberski reacts to addition of MHSA girls wrestling
GREAT FALLS — On Monday, the Montana High School Association executive board approved the addition of high school girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport, which is welcome news to Providence women’s wrestling head coach Carlene Sluberski. And it was welcome news that added to an already good week for Sluberski, as her Argos came off a team win in the Oregon Classic on Saturday. She was a little surprised the motion passed on the first try, but she’s excited that it’s now a reality. Given that Providence is the only college in Montana with a women’s wrestling team, Sluberski’s local recruiting pool could get a lot bigger in the coming years. “I’m really excited. I can’t believe it was sanctioned so quickly. I think a lot of states might even have more girls wrestling, and they’re still farther behind. I think that is huge for Montana,” Sluberski said. “It just opens things right up. I know that there’s a lot of tough girls that come out of Montana, and for the men’s team as well as far as recruiting the men in the state. I think it’ll be great to go out and get local girls from Montana to come in and be able to compete.” Rest of the story at https://www.montanasports.com/high-school-sports/wrestling/providence-womens-wrestling-coach-carlene-sluberski-reacts-to-addition-of-mhsa-girls-wrestling?mc_cid=c5f334f03d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Wrestling Mailbag: The girls’ state (Iowa) tournament is this week and it deserves your attention
It’s going to be an exciting weekend of wrestling all over Iowa, and by saying that, it’d be easy to look directly at the top-ranked Hawkeyes hosting Ohio State on Friday while Oklahoma State will wrestle both Iowa State and Northern Iowa on Saturday and Sunday. That’s fair. But don’t forget about the girls’ state wrestling tournament, hosted again by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association. Waverly-Shell Rock is hosting again, and it’s now a two-day deal, running Friday and Saturday. That the girls’ state tournament has grown into a two-day event is yet another indication that girls’ wrestling is growing at a rate faster than many of us expected this year. According to Trackwrestling, more than 550 girls are registered and eligible to compete this year, far more than the 188 from a year ago and the 55 from five years ago. Last season, the girls’ state tournament featured 87 girls that competed in 10 weights. The wrestling was so enthralling, the action so good, that those of us there forgot that a boys’ tournament was going on that same day, in the same gym. The girls were given a stage, and they put on a show. Now, as many as 370 girls are registered to compete this weekend. While that’s not all of the girls who went out for wrestling this season, that’s still a lot. Consider: a single class at the traditional state tournament each February features just 224 wrestlers — 16 wrestlers at 14 weights. BY TAYLOR MILLER, USA WRESTLING | JAN. 22, 2020,
Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/USOPTC) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Jan. 21, 2020. 2018 World silver medalist at 53 kg Hildebrandt debuted at a brand new weight, 50 kg, and won her bracket last weekend at the Matteo Pellicone International, a UWW Ranking Series event held in Rome, Italy. To open her tournament, Hildebrandt took only 1:33 to pin Ana Maria Torres Rubio of Spain. In the second round, she met up with fellow Team USA athlete Victoria Anthony, who has two fifth-place finishes at the World Championships. Hildebrandt came out on top in a 7-5 decision. In the semifinals, Hildebrandt surpassed three-time Commonwealth champion Devi Nirmala from India with an 8-2 decision. Awaiting Hildebrandt in the finals was 2017 and 2019 World silver medalist Alina Vuc from Romania. Hildebrandt scored first, drawing a passivity point from Vuc to lead 1-0 at the break. In the second period, Hildebrandt went on the shot clock, but Vuc was able to pick up a takedown on the edge. With about 13 seconds left, a scramble ensued with Hildebrandt trailing 2-1. The American got behind Vuc and had her in a quad pod as the clock ticked down. With two seconds left, Hildebrandt flattened Vuc on the mat to take an eventual 4-2 win. Writing Time: It took girls wrestling to finally take me down
It’s an hour into the Iowa girls state high school tournament and my stomach feels more twisted than a pair of Apple headphones after a run through the wash. This is foreign territory for me. For the past 20 years, my view of the sport has primarily been from a neutral seat on press row. I’ve rooted for good stories and quick pins when they’ve helped conquer a newspaper deadline. Otherwise, I’ve tried my best to check out emotionally and write objectively. But impartiality is impossible on this particular weekend. My favorite wrestler is coming up next on Mat 1 in Waverly. Her name is Abbie Lyman. She’s a senior at Cedar Falls High School and she’s family. She’s the daughter of my longtime girlfriend and this is her one and only crack at chasing a state medal. So let me tell you about the best thing I’ve ever experienced in wrestling. Better than anything I’ve seen covering 20 NCAA tournaments or nine World Championships. Better than the ear-ringing duals in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Even better than having an up-close view of the American celebratory scrum in Paris after Kyle Snyder beat Abdulrashid Sadulaev to deliver a men’s freestyle World team title for the United States. To set the story up properly, I first need to provide some background. Rest of the story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1580768481667&twSessionId=gzdmlibrow&postId=315459135

Demon grapplers lead the way at Big East individual championship
STANHOPE — Coming off a dominating showing during dual competition, the Fike High wrestling team carried that over to Saturday’s 3-A Big East Conference individual tournament by winning eight of the contested weight classes in the Southern Nash gym.
Senior Aaron Bancroft, the reigning North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A champion at 160 pounds, stepped up to the 182-pound ranks and kept his 46-match unbeaten streak in 2019-20 intact after defeating Southern Nash junior Jadel Davis in the championship round.
Bancroft pinned SaDarius Lewis of Rocky Mount just 14 seconds into their semifinal encounter and dropped Davis to the mat 10 seconds into the final period. Despite his best efforts, Davis was injured on the takedown and could not continue, awarding the match to Bancroft.
Other Fike winners included junior Jayleen Bullock (43-3), who pinned Southern Nash junior Trondrayl Newsome 30 seconds into the 195-pound final.
Fike junior Zametrie Bagley (37-15) outpointed Luke Coble of Southern Nash 12-7 in the 170-pound final, while at 152, Golden Demons junior Vincent Page secured his 30th win against six losses by pinning Hunt senior Justin Rankin with nine seconds left in the opening period.
With regulation unable to declare a winner in the 145-pound Big East championship, Fike junior Patrick McCullen (45-5) required sudden victory to get past Southern Nash senior Noah Fulghum.
Garrett Weaver secured the Big East 138-pound title by pinning Joseph Murphy of Franklinton with 35 seconds remaining. Weaver, a senior, notched his 23rd win against three losses.
Fike freshman Barrett Klutey required just one match to claim the 120-pound title, pinning Franklinton’s Jacob Roberson 1:23 into their encounter. Rest of the story and photos at http://wilsontimes.com/stories/demon-grapplers-lead-the-way-at-big-east-individual-championship,200545?newsletter=200546
WHAC TO ADD MEN’S WRESTLING AS VARSITY SPORT FOR 2020-21
TDR Editor’s Notes ; It is significant when a conference adds or drops a sport because many times it will encourage schools without wrestling to add the sport. When the Division I Southeastern Conference dropped wrestling in the 1980s all of the schools with the sport dropped it. One would think that with the excess revenue from football that they could afford to sponsor other sports. Every school in the Big 10 has a team. Thus fans need to encourage the conference that their school is in to add sponsorship of a team. It will help to continue the growth in our sport at the college level.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) is set to add men’s wrestling as a championship sport for the 2020-21 season. The addition is the fifth new sport in the last five years for the WHAC and brings the total number of sponsored sports to 26, tying the Heart of America Conference for the second-most in the NAIA. The MidSouth Conference leads the way with 28 sports.
Five current WHAC schools – Cleary, Indiana Tech, Lourdes, Rochester, and Siena Heights – sponsor the sport already. It’s hoped that the total number of schools will increase to six soon. The WHAC joins eight other NAIA conferences sponsor the sport. Rest of the story at https://portal.nwcaonline.com/articles/NWCA_News/WHAC-TO-ADD-MEN-S-WRESTLING-AS-VARSITY-3-2-2020

Sarah and Drew Hildebrandt are a little bit concerned on how their parents, Nancy and Chris, will handle the month of March. “My parents have a nervous month ahead of them,” laughed Sarah. “They better get prepared now. It’s going to be nerve-wracking madness.” The time period of question will actually take place between March 7 and April 5. For during those 29 days, the Hildebrandt siblings could each face their biggest wrestling tests of 2020 over three different weekends. First, Drew, 22, will be at the Mid-American Conference Championships in DeKalb, where the Central Michigan junior will be trying to qualify for his second straight NCAA national tournament. On March 19-21 in Minneapolis, the 125-pound folkstyle wrestler, ranked No. 10 by WIN, hopes to earn his first NCAA Div. All-American honor. D1 Insider: Iowa, Penn State rivalry to come to a head on Friday
Tom Brands took a few moments to ponder a thoughtful question about how the team his Iowa Hawkeyes and every other program has been chasing over the last decade has made everyone else better. His perspective has changed since Penn State has won national championship after national championship – something the Hawkeyes used to do on the regular. Iowa hasn’t won an NCAA wrestling championship since 2010. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions have hoisted eight first-place team trophies this decade. “There’s been some perspective brought to our attention and it’s been over a long period of time,” Brands said. “We know that they are a worthy opponent and we have to keep making sure that we don’t miss anything because they are a worthy opponent. They set the standard. They set it high. Yes, they have made us better. We had no choice.” Now, the top-ranked Hawkeyes have an opportunity to start tilting the next decade in their favor. The Hawkeyes will host the Nittany Lions on Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where Penn State is 2-2 under coach Cael Sanderson since 2009. The home team will undoubtedly be the favorites, but … Rest of the story and more at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1580493860989&twSessionId=hojyuoievl&postId=300852135

Gettysburg’s Delawder lays down De-law on the mat, ranks #1 among females in nation
GETTYSBURG, Adams County — Since the second grade, not even knowing what wrestling was, Gettysburg junior wrestler Montana Delawder saw a flier that caught her eye and brought it home to her parents. She doesn’t come from a background of wrestlers. At the time, her parents didn’t even know if girls could wrestle. They took Montana to open gyms. That’s where she fell in love with the sport. Now, she’s the top female wrestler in the nation in the 112-pound weight class. Over the summer, Montana won the Junior Women’s Free Style National Championship in Fargo, North Dakota — never thinking a simple piece of paper would someday turn into a National Championship. As a freshman two years ago, she was the first girl to qualify for the District 3 AAA District Championships. “Montana is unique. We’ve said it for several years. She’s kind of the heart of the program because she is that emotional leader that get’s everyone excited and pumped up,” said Chris Haines, Gettysburg wrestling head coach. “She doesn’t do anything different then anybody else. The way she treats people on and off the mat, she inspires them and motivates them.” Montana isn’t bothered by wrestling the guys. “Wrestling the guys makes you way tougher, I think, and makes me a lot better of a wrestler. Holmen girls wrestling hopes to help grow the sport
HOLMEN, Wis. (WKBT)–Coach Lulloff thinks his team can accomplish great things. “We got a team that has a ton of potential, but some inexperience.” That potential isn’t just to be better wrestlers, but to help break barriers. “They’re the pioneers of girls wrestling and that’s awesome,” Lulloff said on his female wrestlers. The 15 girls on Holmen’s roster is one of the biggest in western Wisconsin, but it wasn’t always that big. “3 years ago we only had 2-4 girls,” said volunteer assistant Teague Fenwick. Girls like Gwenny Burrows helped the team explode in size. “After getting through the first couple of months, it was shocking to me how much I wanted to stay,” said Burrows. The practices exhausted Gwenny at first.
“It’s getting their cardio ready for the heat of the season,” explained Fenwick. But sticking through it has yielded great results. “I’ve gotten a lot stronger, better at committing to things, last year I didn’t win any matches but this year after sticking with it I’ve won and pinned people,” said Burrows. “Just seeing their confidence and their technique get better as well has been awesome,” added Fenwick. As girls continue to join teams, Holmen hopes that there will be enough teams to make girls wrestling a state sanctioned sport. “Our (competition schedule) is like whenever there’s enough girls, because sometimes there’s not even girls teams,” explained Gwenny. But for now, coach sees them as a part of the team, and the family. “Message is the same, we’re one team. That’s it.’ Doesn’t matter if it’s guy or girl wrestlers,”said Lulloff. MontanaSports.com: Montana High School Association to add girls wrestling as sanctioned sport
BY RICHIE MELBY, MONTANASPORTS.COM | JAN. 20, 2020
BILLINGS — The Montana High School Association executive board passed proposals for the MSHA to add girls wrestling and boys powerlifting as sanctioned sports during the MHSA’s annual meeting on Monday in Billings. The sports will be offered to member schools beginning with the 2020-21 school year. It was announced in late November that the MHSA executive board would propose the additions of the sports after reviewing a study conducted by a committee suggested adding girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport in Montana. Under the current structure, where female wrestlers compete against their male counterparts, it’s believed less than 20 girls wrestlers have qualified for the state tournament in Montana’s history. Only three — former Laurel wrestler Abi Gontarek, Kalispell’s Tilynne Vasquez and Chinook’s Rebecca Stroh — have placed at state. The recent addition of women’s wrestling at the University of Providence in Great Falls, as well as numerous collegiate women’s programs around the country, has sparked an increase in interest of female wrestling, according to those familiar with the study conducted in Montana. MTN Sports took a deeper look into Montana’s female wrestling history and future in last February’s MontanaSports.com Original ” Something to prove.” While the move to add girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport gained traction, Title IX required the MHSA add a complementary boys sport. …
