Stand Out, Pin Down: Wrestler Jake Fernicola ’24 Creates His Own Style

Jake Fernicola ’24 stands out in a Davidson crowd. The college’s only heavyweight wrestler, he’s also president of the Anime Club, has several tattoos, wears vintage t-shirts with flannel on top and usually rocks a hat that says “DAD.” The two-sport athlete chose Davidson over Yale.

“I was actually more focused on football, but I was open to football or wrestling in college, and I went on several official visits,” he said. “Davidson was the only wrestling visit. Ultimately, it came down to football at Yale or wrestling at Davidson. The Davidson Trust and other wrestling support made a huge difference, and I loved the whole experience on campus. In the end, I only applied to Davidson, and it’s definitely been the right choice.”

His nickname, Coca-Cola (risky on a Pepsi campus), is a derivative of his grandpa’s nickname, Joe Pepsi. … rest of story at gocamels.com/news/wrestling-hixenbaugh-named-socon-wrestler-of-the-week

Fix won both matches defeating Guessepe Rea of Ecuador, 10-0, in a freestyle bout, before getting the best of Iowa’s third-ranked Austin Desanto for the third time in his career with a 5-3 decision.

The event will feature a new format this year, with one wrestling mat placed on home plate. Floor seating will also be added for the event. John Smith Unhappy with Big Ten Reluctancy to Schedule Oklahoma State

John Smith, Michigan coach Sean Bormet and Sean Decker, president of REV Entertainment, earlier this week previewed the “Bout at the Ballpark” taking place at Globe Life Field in Arlington on Feb. 3 between the Cowboys and the Wolverines.

Newberry Wolves Put On A Show In First Home Dual Of Season

Newberry Dominates Home Bout To Move To 2-0 On The Season
NEWBERRY,S.C. — In the first home match of the 2022-2023, Head Coach Deral Brown and the Wolves (2-0, 2-0 SACC) put on a show for the home crowd with a 43-12 win over Lincoln Memorial. The night was dominated by the Wolves as all wins came in the form of pins, technical falls, and major decisions. Even after two forfeits from the opposing team, the team remained focused and turned their attention to getting a result for Newberry in a packed Eleazer Arena.

The night would get started at 125 lbs, but the Wolves would not be able to get the dual started on a high note as the Wolves would go down by pin. At 133 lbs, Timothy Decatur (Goldsboro, N.C.) would soon change the mood as he would pin his opponent, though if he would have completed his move he would have had a tech fall victory by a score of 21-5. A second loss for the Wolves in the 141 lb weight class would be the last time a Wolf would not get their hand raised as Newberry would go on a roll after.

Devan Moore (Baxely, Ga.) would make quick work … rest of story at UNCpbraves.com/news/wrestling-rumbles-past-limestone-in-home-dual-debut

GAFFNEY, S.C.- The Limestone University women’s wrestling team fell to Brewton-Parker College on Tuesday, November 15 in the Timken Center by a final score of 31-13. The contest was much closer than the final score suggests, as BPC, the 13th-ranked team in the NAIA, secured 15 points via forfeit.

Klessinger: 12 simple tips to help in wrestling, coaching and life

By John Klessinger

I have been a wrestling coach for 25 years. Over that time, my beliefs and philosophies have changed drastically. As a younger coach, I focused most of my time on winning. More accurately, we didn’t win much back then, so my focus was on losing less. A few years later, I put my attention on myself. What do I need to do to have a winning program?

I took a hard look at myself and determined I needed to make some changes. For the next 10 years, I was determined to be the model for my team. I decided right then to show them how to work hard each day. I participated in nearly every drill, conditioning activity and live wrestled daily. I demonstrated what it meant to be committed by being at every practice. If I wanted them to be there, I had to. No exceptions.

In 22 years as the head coach at South River in Edgewater, Md., I have missed two practices. The first was in 2001 because I got married. The second and last missed practice was in 2004. My six-month-old daughter at the time needed surgery.

I share that with my wrestlers each season like a badge of honor. I want them to be committed. Attendance is the first step in commitment. I have loosened up my policies over the years on attendance. It is still a big deal. However, I recognize there is life outside of wrestling. Well, my wife would disagree with my statement. Which leads to the next evolution of my coaching … rest of story at WIN-magazine.com/2022/11/10/klessinger-12-simple-tips-to-help-in-wrestling-coaching-and-life

It was the second win in the last three season-opening dual meets for the Braves (1-0, 1-0 SACC) who improved to 8-0 all-time in the series with their Carolinas rivals. Logan Seliga kicked off the evening with a no-sweat 15-0 technical fall win over Corey Gallivan at 125 pounds, and freshman Logan Robinson followed with an equally-as-impressive 16-1 technical fall over Brandon Dasen to give the visitors a quick 10-0 lead. WIN’s First Weekly NCAA Div. I Rankings and TPI

NEWTON, Iowa — Three freshmen — Ohio State’s Jesse Mendez and a pair of Iowa State wrestlers, Casey Swiderski and Paniro Johnson — are among 14 newcomers to WIN Magazine’s first weekly rankings and Tournament Power Index of 2022-23, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Mendez, the 2021 Junior Hodge Trophy winner from Crown Point, Ind., won the Michigan State Open last weekend at 133 pounds to earn the No. 11 individual ranking at that weight for the Buckeyes. Swiderski, a native of Dundee, Mich., and Johnson from Erie, Pa., each captured big wins last weekend when the Cyclones defeated Wisconsin in the Battle of the River City event in Jacksonville, Fla. Swiderski is ranked 11th at 141 and Johnson is ranked 14th at 149.

Penn State, with four wrestlers ranked No. 1 at their weight classes — Roman Bravo-Young (133), Carter Starocci (174), Aaron Brooks (184) and Max Dean (197) — remains No. 1 in WIN’s Tournament Power Index and will open its season this Friday in a home dual against Lock Haven.

North Dakota State breaks into Top 25 after weekend upset
Manheim, Pennsylvania – The first weekend of Division I college wrestling came and went with North Dakota State making the biggest early-season statement with its 20-16 upset of then-No. 8 Nebraska on Friday in Lincoln.

The Bison (1-0) vaulted into the Top 25 for the first time this season at No. 19 as the latest NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll was released on Wednesday.

It’s the first time North Dakota State has been ranked in the NWCA Division first time since January 9, 2019 when they were ranked No. 23.

Missouri was the only Top 5 team in dual action over the weekend. The Tigers blanked Lindenwood 55-0 in a unique dual meet held outside at the school’s softball facility, The Diamond. The Tigers (1-0) moved up to No. 3 this week. There was some reorganization in the Top 10 as Iowa State went 3-0 in Jacksonville, Florida, including a resounding 26-6 win over then-No. 12 Wisconsin at The Battle in River City.

NC State (1-0) opened its season with a 26-12 home win over Appalachian State. … rest of story at NWCAonline.com/north-dakota-state-breaks-into-top-25-after-weekend-upset
